So i am new to these engines i have an ST20 carry van it has the lj50 engine i still don't know the power specs for this one tho i have a service manual for the ST10 carry that has an lj50 engine so i use this book for info now i find out that some things are not the same between the one sofar is the distributor i checked the ST10 book it says igniton timing 15 deg before top dead centre for engine speeds of up to 1000rpm and 23 deg btdc for engine speeds of 2000rpm and over. So i was checking the timing but it would not advance at all :? so i pull the distributor out to check it and there is no advance 8O now that said there is a sticker on the alternator that says timing 23 deg +/- 1 deg. the ST10 manual says engine power is 30HP at 4500rpm and 39.8 lb-ft of torque at 3000rpm. with a 5.9 to 1 compression ratio.

Now the LJ50 4wd engine has 33HP at 5500rpm and 41.6 lb-ft of torque at 3500rpm with a 6 to 1 compression ratio. Do these engines have an advace system in there distributors? As i don't know what specs and power the ST20 is ment to have does anyone have the info?

Cheers jamie

The LJs have a centrifugal advance mechanism in the distributor, also the LJ has a downdraught carb, the van had a sidedraught. I did have a carry dizzy kicking around here at one stage and I remember being amazed that it had no advance mec. Was a real low profile thing from memory too. I vote go the 23 deg if you want to get to 60 kmh, or get a proper dizzy.

Yep the carry van dizzy is very low in height. I have set it to 23 deg and i only get to about 92 kmh out of the van.

8O I'm thinking 92 kmh might be revving a bit! I have a ST10 manual as well, but no ST20 and wondered what that dizzy came from and why they'd do that, obviously there's room for the taller dizzy in the ST10. I think the ST10 might have a different distributor drive housing which lays the dizzy over closer to the water pump. Suzuki used to like slowly eliminating differences between models to keep production costs down, maybe the 20 has the same as the LJ50? Also the LJ50 originally had a slightly different bellhousing pattern, flywheel and clutch etc which they changed in about '76 to "make the clutch and transmission interchangeable with other models". Looking at the pics in both manuals they also have a different exhaust manifold and alternator bracket.

There is room in the 20 for the taller dizzy. The main differance between the 10 and 20 is that the 20 is about 20cm longer and 10cm wider. If you look at the performance spec for the 10 in the manual it says max speed 105kmh i can't get that out of the 20 yet anyway. From what i can tell the motors in the 10 and 20s lie over more flatter then in the LJ50s hence the dirrerent exhaust etc could be wrong about that.
