Post subject:  Transfer slipping out of 4L

Hey Guys,

Fitted my sierra transfer up yesterday and bent the stick to suit hole in the jimny floor. Anyway, i got the stick in the right position so it wasn't touching the floor any where while in 2h, 4h and 4L, but when i got to put it in 4L it keeps jumping out of gear. There is no pressure on the stick while in 4L and i can start moving with it in 4L, but as soon as i back of the power ( ) it jumps out of gear.

I can only think of 2 thing's that would cause this,

A) The spring in the t-case isn't seated right?

B) The oil i have used it to thick? I am using VMX 80w-90.

Am i on the right track, or is it some thing a bit deeper in-side the transfer causing this?

A) There is no spring. Just detent balls. If it selected 4L and didn't fall straight out while it was on your work bench, this is likely NOT the problem.

B) No.

How tight is the interior rubber boot around the shifter when in 4L? Try taking the boot off, and going for a drive.

8O Then what spring is in the little hole where the stick goes into? :?

I have already taken the boot off - no difference :(

You mean the 50c piece sized spring around the base of the shifter ball? Or the tiny ones that hols tension against the detent balls in the selector rod assembly?

Its just there to hold the shifter ball into the bush by pushing against the locking ring above it. It has no bearing on the shift movement. You have another issue.

Is there a shifter bush below the stick?

Are you sure all the detent balls are in place between the selector rods?

Yep shifter bush it there. I also just got a message from 31zook, saying that the previous owners of this case were having the same issues, and it needs a rebuild. :( Shit!

New plan. I have a spare case here i was going to rebuild and put 5:14's in.

What is the best rebuild kit to buy?

I was thinking at buying these next week...

Get the complete rebuild kit for $209. Also consider getting the heavy duty front ouput aswell.

i know it was like 6 years ago, but my calmini 5.14 gears came with everything to rebuild the case including bearings and oil as pictured in your link...

wont 5.14 be too low for you though??? wouldnt you be better off with 4.16?

also, have you checked that the tcase isnt twisting and fouling on the body, causing it to shift out of gear?

The t-case isn't moving, the mounting system is rock solid. Also, i forgot 5:14's were %18 in high  i will go 4.09 instead.

What's the best way to order of LR? Just e-mail them?

I always call them. You should be able to get them around 11pm your time. They are in Provo, Utah.

and that's not wht u need for 31s??? taking it from the fact that the trialjimny for vvts is 20% and it was "ok" just a tad too much

unless the non-vvt gearbox mess up with ur ratios.....

and well I forgot the sierra Tcase also gives u a bit extra no?

It would end about been about 28% in high with 5.14s.

So I pulled the stick back out of the t-case and seen that spring wasn't seated right so I put it back in, now its all good
