It's a family car or a soft 4wd. I had a car with it and never again.

i thought esp came about due to people freaking out when somthing happens on a straight road, they swing the steering one way and try to swing it back and there on there way to a tree ?
my comment was if you buy a v8 with 300kw one day the power will catch you out in the wet ? im not shore how that doesnt add up

This has been my third trip in my 09 GV and the ESP is really pissing me off. Is there a way to disconnect it completely whilst in 4WD? I know it gets turned off in 4L but the 35km limit in 4H is a pain. I was on the beach today in 4H doing about 50K and the stupid ESP kept cutting in and trying to brake the slipping wheels. I made it through without a problem but the strange noise and braking is disconcerting. My cousin has a Kia Sorrento (about the same year) and his turns off as soon as he goes into any 4WD mode. I can't understand why the GV turns it off after 35K and the Kia doesn't. Can anyone shed some light on this for me as if I am stuck with this, I may need to look at the same Kia I'm not sure if this has been covered but I did do a search and came up with not much...

Only difference is his runs on a soft beach without a problem and mine has an ESP that seems to want to stop me in my tracks. If it's not braking the slipping tyres and making me feel uncomfortable, it's kicking in when I'm trying to concentrate and dropping all my power to a crawl. It is annoying!!

yeah its shit mine does it to especially in rutted sand when u want to go faster than 35 just stay on the gas and put up with it. i asked about this on http://www.newgrandvitara.net/ and apparently theres fuck all ucan do cept pull the abs fuse ???

I see it as a serious flaw because it starts to fight against what I am trying to do. It basically means all my offroading has to be in 4L as the 4H mode cannot be trusted.. If any one knows how to kill the ESP fuse, that would be great. I still think it's a stupid over sight by Suzuki as it's something I shouldn't have to do!!!

The annoying thing is that it re-activates it when you hit that speed then when you are busy doing other things like "offroading"....getting out of a soft patch of sand and don't realise it has done it, the ESP takes over and all of a sudden it starts braking wheels that are slipping and cut engine power so you have your foot to the floor and it's just trickling over..... I AM PISSED OFF OVER THIS TO SAY THE LEAST.........

Yes it is a soft 4wd but it handled the soft beach beautifully....that is if it wasn't for the ESP trying to take over!! If there is a way to just kill it whilst I'm offroad, that will have to do. Apart from that, it is a fantastic car!! I think I'm going to go and have a chat with the boys from suzieworld to fix this annoyance.... What ever happened to a transfer case lever and getting out and locking the hubs in....sheeeeez

Dirt roads here are used often so peoLe that drift around corners become statistics quite quickly.

Can't u just drive it on he beach in low range There low is not that deep so u should be able to get to 60 which is all u need on the beach

sand and high speed gravel can be quite dangerous when mid corner esp takes all the power away or brakes one of the front or rear tyres. the gravel was really bad it nearly tried to put me into a tree or ditch a few times this was doing around 80-90 i found it to be more of a saftey thing than on the sand where its just annoying

I'm not trying to be a wanker here, but is it really "dangerous" or just "unexpected"? Whilst it's unnerving to feel a car do something contrary to what you'd expect, I'm not sure it's necessarily more dangerous than without ESP. However, I am quite sure it will work hard to counter what many of us consider "normal" driving on dirt - i.e set the car up and drift it around the corner. If you drive this way I'm sure ESP will be doing all sorts of things to correct the car. My guess is that a different driving style will be required to get the best out of ESP on dirt. Steve. PS whilst I don't own a GV, I have driven cars with ESP on wet roads

Have you contacted Suzuki about it? Even if they have no answers for you if enough people complain about it then it might be something they look into on the next upgrade.

As an opposite, A friend has a turbo focus says watch this, turns into a long tight corner, 270 degree exit ramp, concrete both sides, plants his foot and turns, once we get to the point where we are too fast to keep traction it starts doing its thing and we go around fine, he just held the wheel, no correcting or stuffing around That is what its sposed to do, if you are doing what you think is normal driving and its pulling you back perhaps you need to rethink your driving style

IMO the only reason ESP has become mandatory is because too many stupid people have tried their awesome 'drifting' skillz on public roads, caused crashes, blamed the road conditions instead of their own actions and now because of crash statistics goverment bodies have been forced to take action and legislate against your awesome 'drifting' practices by making ESP mandatory reducing your ability to get sideways. From my experience with ESP and Commodores - on tarmac you need to be driving in a fashion far from ordinary before the ESP will fire - and it does work when a sudden slide catches you off guard - such as dropping a wheel onto a gravel shoulder while cornering. From my days driving a jap import I also found throttle control much easier with more power available - it was easier to back off and find the sweet spot instead with a more responsive/powerful engine so Jordan, your 300kW argument just doesn't add up.

the issue would be though, that the people who like drifting corners etc are going to pull their ABS fuses and then not only will they be missing ESP, they'll also have no ABS! lol

Also, I've owned about 200kW in a roughly 1300kg RWD vehicle and never had a problem with 'lots of power and wet roads'. Maybe I have some awesome skills of being able to control the throttle or maybe I had some magical grippy tyres. Stupid 'drifters' are the reason my insurance was $2000 per annum with a $1000 special vehicle excess on top of the standard excesses...
