A quick question for the tech heads.
Is it possible to rebuild the bottom end of a g13ba (stock sierra) into a g13b (gti) bottom end? I know you can install 16v pistons, but do will the gti crank and conrods swap over?
Thus making the stock engine in the car being capable of gti rpm? Also being able to then install the gti head whilst keeping the stock engine.

What would the advantage of all the work be compared to just swapping in a GTi motor? Just keeping the same engine #?

Steve Pretty much. Well if the gti needed a rebuild, and the old tired engine was there.

A mate of mine is running a g13ba block, his using viatara pistons and the GTI crank. From memory the block needed to be bored out 1mm to fit the vit pistons. Everything else went together. Also using GTI head. He runs this combo in his boosted Suzuki GTI. His got about 125kws on safe tune and has run this setup for about two years and thrashes the piss out of it everyday. He lived around the corner from me and ya could hear how he treated on the way to work every morning loL.

The GTi crank will swap over, you'll have to match the rods to the pistons - the GTi pistons use a full floating wrist pin that is retained by circlips in the pistons, the 8v pistons use a slightly smaller, press fitted wrist pin.
I'm running the forged GTi crank and bearing stiffeners in an overbored 8v engine - I reused the 8v rods with new flat topped high compression pistons.

interesing all the sohc motors I have pulled down have had 3 main bearings? where as gti has 5. gti crank is also forged where has sohc is cast I know they will break cranks if reved hard with sohc bottom end.
rods may swap over and pistons are same bore.

Were those SOHC motors all Suzuki G13 engines? I have no idea what the F series engines are like, but ALL of the Suzuki G13 series engines are 5 main bearing engines.
