Post subject:  Piston pressing
Hey everyone,
I'm replacing my pistons and rings next weekend, I just need a little help.
Here are my questions; will I need a press to get the pin out of the piston/conrod and can I put it back in myself or should I take it to a shop and if so is there anywhere in Melbourne people would recommend. Thanks

Don't need a pressed. They should push out one you remove the circlips

What engine? My 8v had interference fit piston pins, my 16v had circlips.

A question - you're replacing pistons & rings - presumably you're either going to bore, or at the very least, hone the block - why not have the shop fit the pistons to the rods at the same time.

x47352847 Some things need to be done as a minimum. I think it is great that your going to have a crack at this yourself, there is obviously something wrong with the engine or you wouldn't be doing this work. My suggetion would taking the bare block to an engineering mob, check, size and hone the bores, buy correct size pistons/rings to suit :peaceout:

I broke the skirt off number three piston, and amazingly the bore looks fine so I'll just be getting it honed. It's a g13ba engine the pistons don't have circlips on them does that mean they aren't the originals?

So your eye is THAT good you can see that the bore isn't out of round?

I gather this is something that I need to leave to the pros, off to the machine shop then. Any ideas what it would cost to have this work done?

It will all depend on how much they do to it. I imagine it being a by the hour type labour charge etc. Ring around. The last block I had done had 8 holes not 4 :rambo:

Are you sure you have the correctly calibrated eye to judge bore wear if you dont know how to swap the pistons on the rods?

Might I suggest taking the block and rods to a shop and getting them to bore it and supply pistons to suit.

The good thing about this is Im learning a shit load about engines, and yer I realise that i wouldnt be able to judge the bore thats the noob coming out in me.

Good on you for giving it a go....you'll learn heaps
If you're doing it 'properly' then it won't be a cheap exercise

Have you considered spending abit more money and putting a 1.6 or GTi engine in while you're at it?!

Cost $250 I think for my last 4 cyl bore. That was with 120thou overbore so it should be cheaper for you

Holy crap... :shocked:
I get engines bored and honed for $20 per cylinder. Last one was a 1.0 I took from standard to +40 thou.

It was a while ago, that may have included other work like acid bath, piston pressing. Don't remember exactly but it was way more than $80 of machining in it

I did consider putting a 1.6 in it, but I got scared off by all the wiring on the g16b would a 16a be something that a beginner like me could put in with out too many dramas? And what would you pay for one of these engines?

Don't be put off by the wiring.
I don't like electrics either so i just paid an auto sparkie to hook it all up

I wouldn't personally get the g16a (carby) because the best part about the g16b engine is that it's EFI....no more stalling on hills etc
