having a problem with my winch. it wont go. it is a crappy supercheap winch. i have thrown away the solonoid box and remote that came with the winch as its rubbish bought a waterproof winch solenoid of ebay which came with no wiring diagram. i wired it up using a diagram i found of google and it didnt work so i mixed and matched the cables around but nothing except i got a spark on the battery once. so is there a way to check if the winch is foooooked without using the solonoid and does anyone know who to wire this solenoid up? same as this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Winch-12V-So ... 3f0eb4bfd6 cheers in advance Ricky |

Easy as anything to check if the winch is bust. Just put jump leads direct from the battery terms to the winch terms on the winch motor itself. Then you'll know if your winch works or wether you just messed up the solenoid wiring. |

My crappy supercheap solenoid box works fine. How did you conclude that this ebay solenoid set would be of better quality? |

mine got water and mud in it after i got bogged once and then would only work when i jiggled the cord for the remote and this new solenoid is more compact so will be easier to mound under the bonnet. imo they are crap. |

![]() Sketched this up, some solenoids need an extra wiring to power the radio receiver bit not familiar with those, but basically this shows the principles. 4 Big terms two for the Battery Supply In, and two for the winch Supply out, Four Heavy Duty contactors and some internal wiring that you can't see connected to a Bi-polar relay that just swaps the polarity around depending on which direction you want to run the motor. So absically you have four big Heavy duty terms and usually three smaller terms to operate the little relay. Probably the middle terminal of the three will be the Positive supply to the relay, and the two either side will be negative switching through the control rocker switch that swaps the polarity around to that little relay. |

Most winch motors arent permanent magnet so your diagram wont work 3 cables to the motor, one supplies power to the armature when the solenoids are activated, the other 2 swap polairty depending on direction and go to teh magnet coils |

I haven't seen any with three cables to the winch motor, but I assume the motor is earthed so thats the third connection? Can you sketch or find a sketch? I thought I had mine figured out, but there is still like two or three ways of doing the same thing. EDIT - heres the Tigerz 11 wiring diagram. This is a lot more useful then my dodgy sketch But it still doesn't show the internal wiring.

Ok got the winch wired up but works when ground is on and wont turn off using switch. I am trying to wire in cab switch with forward and reverse. What have I stuffed up. Im on phone so cant draw how ive done it but is same as diagram. |

Almost all proper winches have 3 terminals (though I have a really old 8000 lb Ramsay that's permanent magnet field). The 3 terminal ones have the armature terminal, marked A (powers 2 brushes, the other 2 connect to earth), and each end of the field windings has a terminal marked F1 and F2. When the winch is operated in 1 direction, +12v is connected to F1 and F2 is connected to A. In the other direction, +12v connects to F2 and F1 connects to A. They are a series motor and direction is changed by reversing the field with respect to the armature. They still use the bullbar as earth (negative). |

wow my sketch of what I thought mine was doing is complete rubbish then. And my tigerz 11 only came with instructions and cables for two wires from solenoid to winch motor. Must be an unusual design. Hope you get it sorted. I had to figure mine out when an auto leccy trainee made an attempt to neaten up my wiring and switched a couple of wires by accident. All works now though - not sure how. All the best with yours. doh. |

On a permanent magnet field motor there are only 2 wires from the solenoid pack to the motor. There is no earth return for the motor. It's reversed by reversing polarity of the 2 cables. Positive and negative both go to the solenoid pack to the other 2 terminals. You can use the same solenoid pack for either type of motor. |

Im a noob to auto electrics so I dont understand that stuff 3cyl I am going to see a mate whos an auto elec tomorrow he has done one before says its easy Thanks for ur help anyway guys. |
