| Post subject: | Fire Extinguishers |
Got to get 2kg of fire extinguisher for a rally event this weekend and was just looking for opinions on whether a single 2kg or 2 1kg extinguishers is better? What's better for accessibility and fire fighting ability. Price doesn't matter, I don't like skipping out on safety, I just want the most efficient set up for fighting a fire. |

One 2kg should be fine. What do the rules state? There's not a whole lot of difference in size, I can get a photo to compare if you want |

Rules state you must have a minimum of 2kg of powder in whatever configuration you please. Proper rally cars have 1kg within reach of the driver/navi and another right over the back diff or positioned for optimum weight distribution but mine isn't exactly a highly tuned performance car

I would go a few smaller rather than one large extinguisher. You never know the circmstances under which you (or someone else) will need to access and use it quickly... |

One person can grab an extinguisher from one side of the car, another person can get one from the other. |

You will be better off with one larger extinguisher (2-2.5 Kg) rather than several smaller ones (1 Kg) |

yeah but if the bit thats on fire is where your extingisher is like my cabin fire was how do you get the 1 extingisher you have |

If the fire is so big that you can't get your extinguisher, it is most likely way out of control! |

I agree. One in reach of the driver, and one in reach for the passenger, or someone outside of the vehicle. I know you probably already know but,(but for those who don't) when you have a dead short in the electrical system, a fire extinguisher won't put it out, nor do any good. A power shut off switch, or poer key is always a good idea if you do not have one already. The only way to stop that kind of electrical fire is to cut the power, or let the lead finally burn apart (if it ever will). My friend had a huge 1 or 2 gauge wire pinch in his seat hinge, and I had the privilege of watching the fire start up over and over again, until the main battery lead was cut. The entire length had welded itself to the floor pan of the pickup, |

Skyman yeah I do know that all too well. My sierra burn out similar to ASJR's and Shep's in late 2009, a shut off switch is to be installed before the event. I went out and got a 2kg and another 1kg. I'll have the 2kg mounted to the back of the cage on the passenger side, a 1kg mounted within my reach in the drivers seat and a 1kg mounted at the rear of the vehicle so no matter which direction you are coming to the car it shouldn't be hard to grab one. |

Ask Shep what he recomends... now that he's a firey of course.  I've got a 1kg mounted on the back door along with a fire blanket. The reason of mounting it on the door is, space available, chances are a fire will happen when I'm cooking and the door is usually open whilst I do as the speakers are also on the back door. As for competitions, You'd want one that the navi or yourself can grab easily. I'd say have 2-3 1kg. 1Kg usually does the trick for extinguishing and if the car sets on fire you'd want more than one person trying to stop it. So having that extra at hand would allow someone else to assist. |

I wonder if it would be worthwhile getting two types. As in one suited for oil/fuel the other for electrical. Or do they specify it has to be an AB(E) powder etc? |

Has to be AB(E) Powder. You can run as much as you want of other stuff but just have to have at least 2kg of powder. |
