Hey guys, Im just about to start building a new flat tray for my lwb to finish the restoration off, and want to know people's opinions on the cab guard/roll bar tube sizing and thickness.

I'm completely open to comments, as I've ordered the steel to do the tray, but haven't ordered the tube for the cab guard.

Is it worth the extra weight to build the cab guard out of steam pipe, or will exhaust pipe be strong enough? I don't plan on rolling it very often, but if it was to fall, it may be a hard landing. The weight i'd assume would be considerably more for steam pipe? I plan on running a front runner board up the front of the tray, but then plan on putting a cross brace across the window frame area of the cab guard, instead of mesh. Is it worth just buying 90 degree mandrels and cut them off to the desired angle to follow the body line, or get some bent up on a swanky bender?

Secondly, what size tube looks to be a good proportion? I like the size of about 2 1/4" but if possible, could people load pics of there cab guards and the pipe size, so I can get a feel of the optical illusion the guard looks like. I don't want it too big, but don't want it looking small.

Use 40NB medium. Its just under 2" diameter, easy to get and cheap.

Don't use exhaust pipe. Its for Exhausts.

I'll add to that.

I only ever use 32NB (42.4mm OD). any bigger looks silly IMO. But as a headboard on a LWB ute, 40NB will look fine. And bigger, and the bend radius will be big and ugly, and you'll be adding unwanted weight.

Thanks for your wise words Fatzook. So 40nb would be the go? and just buy that size mandrel bends of the corners too? I only have immediate access to the cheap red nubco pipe benders, which are ok, but I don't want to kink the outside of the pipe. When you mentioned medium, is that the wall size? Do you have a pic of a 40nb Headboard?

Doesn't matter if you use heavy pipe or exhaust tube because unless it's anchored to the chassis it won't do SFA in a roll over. I just finished helping my brother build a tray for his GQ patrol and he used 3" exhaust tube, looks trick on the patrol but would be too big for what you want. As stated above 32NB standard would probably be what your chassing.

I never mentioned how I was building the tray, Just what size pipe would look adequate on a zook. A good friend of mine has 2.5 inch 3mm wall pipe for his cab guard on his hilux, and to me it looks borderline too chunky. I sat some 2 1/4 inch exhaust tube that had an exhaust shop bend in it up to the back of the cab, and it looked reasonable, but without walking away from the car it was hard to picture it.

I'm sure the stability of the cab guard in a roll over has alot more geometry to do with than just it's mounting point, that wasn't my concern.

I was simply stating that in my opinion you won't need thick wall pipe unless you were building a ROPS. I only included that bit as you mentioned steam pipe in your original post. I agree with Fatzook on the 32NB.

That entire tray is 32NB. Next size up is the 40NB I mentioned earlier. Perfect for your needs IMO.

Don't buy dies. Sub it out. Draw up your centre line dimensions, and let these guys bend it for you in one piece ..... http://www.rollfab.com.au/

I've subbed out a few cage hoops etc over the years, and for one-offs, its way cheaper than buting dies. ( like $7-10 per bend)
