Hey guys I'm currently in the middle of a rebuild for a g13ba engine, and I'm a little bit confused about piston numbers. I read in the manual that the standard number 2 pistons are a different size to the standard number 1 pistons. On the block it is stamped with 2222 but the piston set I've got contains 2 2s and 2 1s will I have to get more number 2 pistons or will the rings expand a bit more on the smaller ones and make up the difference? |

First a question - why are you rebuilding ? As far as I know, Suzuki hasn't sold anything with a G13BA engine within the past decade or so, which means you're probably rebuilding a worn engine - if I'm right on that score, you can completely ignore their confusing numbering system on the block & the pistons. That brings the second question - standard pistons in a worn engine ? At the factory, blocks can end up with different sized bores and so the pistons must be selected to match the bores - hence the numbering system - but once the engine has any appreciable wear, well, it no longer applies - get yourself a set of oversized pistons & rings and have the machine shop bore the block to suit. |

I had a mechanic measure the bores with one of those cylinder measure things ad he told me that the bores were within the specifications for a standard bore, so he honed it for me and said get standard pistons. When I say rebuilding i Mean pistons rings and bearings. I'm doing all this because I had the oils rings and one compression ring snap and come off one of the piston. |

your really need to bore and go bigger mate it wont last long. Im pretty sure there 1mm straight up. Those rings are probly broken from slap or you breaking them on the carbon on the way out. |

What's the mileage on this engine? If you have any sort of mileage on that engine, and it's was within spec when you stripped it, it would have been on the very edge, and is almost certainly beyond spec now that it's been honed (honing removes material from the bore, making it larger). Because of the wear & the honing, the pistons you have will probably work - in fact I suspect you're going to have excessive piston/cylinder clearance - regardless of whether they're a 1 or a 2 - but like sam says, it's not gonna last long. |

Until you pull an engine down and check it properly any assumption you make is merely speculation. From my own experience (not from something that I have read) on the engines that we have pulled down and re rebuilt and resold only one was out of spec in the bore and had to be bored out, the rest were just honed. We strip them then send the block, head and crank to the machine shop, they crack test, size and do any machining that is required, we then reassemble with the new parts required. The machine shop will do what is needed and then charge me for their work that is how they make their money, if those engines required boring they would not have hesitated to do it and charge me for it. |
