Best way is to get 17 mm socket on a breaker bar and lock it into place and give your key a quick turn, works every time

Yeah got it. Hardest bit was holding the engine still (wasnt in a car) I used two 4m bars to get it undone. Anyway the block and crank I scored are in good nick

engine runs, so you screw everything up

Further to this....

The engine starts, and runs. What happens next can range from nothing at all, to someone or something getting nailed by a rapidly moving breaker bar and 17mm socket.

You don't need ignition, you just need the motor to crank over on the starter a few turns.
