Mate of mine has a sr20 motor and computer i can get for dirt cheap n been thinking bout putting it into my coily but how much work is needed and would i be better off with something else as the 1.3 carby just aint doing it for me at the moment. or can some simple mods.be done to make the 1.3 abit more easy going?

What problems are you having with the 1.3?

Atm its mainly just performance issues. im aware only being a 1.3 its not gonna be the faatest thing out there but it juat seems sluggish. Im still yet to put a snorkel on which should help a little but i went for a trip on the weekend and on the highway just just munching on the fuel.
Just doesnt seem right, and quite an aggessive knocking sound when at idle and under load.

Sounds like your motor isn't running properly to me.

Not a lot wrong with the 1.3.

you'll have way more dramas trying to make an SR20 work in the sierra (let alone reliability and parts availability) - if you want more power and dont mind spending some money, get yourself a 1.6L EFI engine (G16). its pretty much a bolt-in modification.

My 1.3 was shit, then i got a new carby, then i rebuilt the engine, each time it got doubly better, the i actually tuned the thing and it got even better still, new coil new leads new plugs, just as much power increase, took off the egr installed a cat converter and new rear muffler onto the existing extractors, lights up the 27" BFG's on tarmac pulls alright, you still know it's small but now it's a happy revvy little thing,

not saying you wanna go to all that effort, but i found out that the little 1.3L isn't a slug after all they're mostly just old and thrashed and need some TLC, my only plans in the future is a carby rebuild and if i wanna get crazy a port n polish and cam,

a friend of mine has a 1.6 head on his and it screams,

the potential in the 1.3 is often overlooked,

i suppose it's what your into, i enjoyed getting more out of the engine i already had than taking the easy way out

I don't think most people would say fitting a g16B or an sr20 was "the easy way out"

In fact, you've touched on the main reason the g13 is troublesome - the carby.

The other reason the g13 is a hassle to work with is there's no useable, obvious auto gearbox option. Both of these problems don't arise with either a g16b or SR swap.

Having seen an SR swap into a Sierra, I'd avoid one myself. Too many fiitment issues.

Steve.

hold off on the snorkel if you are thinking of a swap i run mine on the passenger side with the 1.6 :)
saves paying for two

buy transfer gears, WAY cheaper than an engine swap of any kind.

Think i might give the 1.3 an overhaul, probably well over due.

you cant just go buy gears.... you need to match the gears to the tyre size you're running. And if the info under your name is correct you've got a coily, which means you have to change to a leafy tcase before you can even consider putting gears in.

unless you're running larger than 235/75r15 you wont NEEEEED gearing, but it would help a fair bit.

4.16 gearing will sort 235's out.

coily transfer is chain driven, leafy is gear driven. the gears you purchase replace some of the gears in the case, therefore wont fit a coily.
