Hey guys,

just picked myself up a beauty for $1200 bucks. She has 160,000 and is an 85 1.3 in mint condition, no rust. I am looking to put in a proven, capable, high flex suspension system, that will not have me eating rice for 6 months. I was going to put the calmini 5" lift in with hilux diffs, but thought before getting excited and jumping in I should get some opinions off the people whom have done alot of trial and error. i assume that there are a few setups which you guys can all agree works. I am looking for height and width, and a bit of cutting and welding isnt too much stress, as I have an mechanical engineer on hand whom owes me some favours. I am not looking to do a full rockhopping comp truck setup, but do want something seriously capable as a weekender, and i would like to do it right the first time. Or do i just got with the off the shelf calmini kit?

any info, or links to threads would be great.

You won't need hilux diffs unless you want a rockhopping comp truck in my opinion.

A 2" lift with rear springs in the front will get it flexing nicely.
Some bumpstop spacers or guard chop will get 31's working very well.
Some 5.14 or 6.5 ratio reduction gears, chromo front axles, front and rear locked.

You will go everywhere just shy of climbing a tree and still be very drive able as a daily.

89-93or94 used that grill with metal flares. Late 94 on went to the grill with the S badge.\

is a 2" lift seriously all thats needed? if thats the case, then what shocks etc do i go for? is it worth doing the 2" body lift?

I run the commodore wagon shocks in the front and rancho(gay) shocks in the rear but they are the same length as hiace shocks.
a 2" lift is seriously all thats needed. There isn't a need for anymore lift/SPOA unless you're going 35's+ and thats going into hilux diffs, wheelbase extension blah blah.
Dont do a body lift unless you havent got any fab skills and want 33's.

hey mate thanks for all the help. im an amature, i will be buying the parts and handing them to my mrs old cheese haha. therefore will any year commodore/hiace shocks do?, what leaf spring mods will i need to do.

A body lift is good if big tyres 33"+ is what you want, that and some guard cutting and massaging. Twin lock it with chromo's up front and you'll embarrass most trucks out there.

As someone who has the calmini kit and spent years fixing and tweaking all it's failures I can't recommend it. The shackle reversal is a good idea in my opinion but does require some extra thought and work than just bolt in, and the sky manufacturing one available on lowrange may be a better proposition considering Calmini's lack of thought in their kit.

I find that my 1.5" Old man emu suspention with Commodore/hiace shock Combo works very well!

If it is a 1988 then it should have plastic flares and should have 3.9 NT diff ratio instead of 3.7 WT ratio, however the pic looks like metal flares so maybe its a bitsa.

I have had 35mm ironman springs in my GV for 2 years, never had a problem, only going to a tough dog spring now, because i want more firmer springs with more load rating... :D

You can't compare coils and leaf springs.

ironman are rubbish. They ride super hard and take a long time to settle in. If you want anything half decent i can supply EFS springs in 50mm lift or Desert Fox which also ride really nicely and give 50mm lift. PM with your location if you want a price.

If you want rears all round I can do this as well. You don't have to buy matching shocks, i'd go good leaves first then measure up the flex you have and buy matched length shocks to suit.

Mine is a 1988 WT with big flanges, metal flares, and 3.7's

Really? I just bought 1 iron man leaf pack for some shuffling of leaves to fix lean and they looked not to bad, main leaf was a bit short though.

Yep that's why people talk about 88.5, it is the change over year so sometime after the middle of 1988 they had all the later model WT parts incorporated .

mate i just fitted some today. they fit ok, but i imagine they need a lift to perform better, as the fronts bottom out quite easily

What bottoms out? Hope your shocks are not bottoming out before it hits the bumpstops! If so you will need to extend the bumpstops before you destroy your shocks and or mounts

I have just got some hyundai x3 brake lines for her. I realised that the rears did not seem long enough so i only purchased fronts. Can anyone tell me what brake lines off another car will be suitable for the rear to give some nice extra length?
