hi all i need help, the problem..... the car in idle and first gear when you push the accelarator down it gurgles and almost stalls and sounds like it is not getting enough fuel but when i get above 2000rpm it is fine, and when i am driving and i am light on the throttle the car feels like it is jumping along, alsmost like it stalls and goes etc.....when i stop the revs drop almost to the 2nd line above zero and then slowly goes back up to 1000 rpm.... what i have done so far (my father inlaw is a mechanic and we are stumped) so far we have replaced the block, as the first one have a crack, we have replace the fuel pump (it is external) we have replace head gaskets, checked the carby and replaced seals it is fine, the water pump, new radiator and fan belts, spark plugs....... any help would be great it is very frustrating.......

I'd look further at the carby. Sounds like the primary throat isn't working properly. Have you stripped the carby right down?

Yeh we pulled the carby apart and replaced seals and needle and seat the carby itself was fine

Hey guys sorry to bring up an old thread, but i thought itd save me making another! The zook has developed a similar problem to the one in this post. Going on the way to tafe tonight, going over the thousand fucking speed bumps campbelltown tafe has, when i hit one of them the engine started acting all weird. VERY slow to respond, id press the pedal down and it would have about a second delay. Anything under about 700rpm and it will stall. Once i start it up again in neutral its all good and idles fine, then i can drive it but i really have to give it some. If i accelerate too slowly it will die, but if i keep the revs over about 2000rpm its all good. Go to stop at traffic lights in neutral and it stalls again. Just had to give it a run to get it home so i didnt have to get it towed. Reading a few threads i think it may be a carby/fuel pump or fuel filter problem? Only thing i can really think of is when i hit the speed hump it sent something out of whack? Am i along the right lines? First think i might try is get a new fuel filter incase the bump sent some shit from the tank up the fuel line, failing that maybe a new fuel pump? Or is there a way to test the one thats in there? Ive got next to no idea about carbys and where id start with that so id like to leave that till last Any help guys would be much appreciated!

I would check the catalytic converter (if you got one over there) and make sure it is not plugged. The symptoms sound almost exactly the same, and the big bumps could be the cause of the plug.

mine was similar, however it had nothing to do with revs... it idled mostly fine (sounded like it had a slight miss but held steady rpm) and was fine at full throttle, but anything in between it would hesitate horribly... that was dirty fuel, i replaced both filters, intended to drop the tank and flush it but its been fine since. try reversing the #2 and #3 leads, start the engine and give it some hard revs about 3 or 4 times then switch the leads back, see if that helps. it backfires any junk blocking the jets back through the carby.

Yeah I might change the fuel filter anyway, havnt changed that since I've had the car. And maybe the leads too, they are looking a bit old. I'll try the suggestion with the leads whincup and see how that goes.

Hey guys had a quick play tonight as the suns going down, changed the fuel filter and no good, still the same. Old one did have a bit of shit come out of it, but otherwise pretty clean. From what i can tell, the little boot around the acceleration plunger is rooter and it sounds like its sucking air from there? For a test i took the air filter piping off and covered the hole with my hand. Felt it sucking a bit but i could hear it sucking air from somewhere else? I was leaning towards that plunger? Even with the air filter hole fully covered, it would not stall? I thought it would have as if the air filter was blocked, but nothing? Gonna have to wait till friday before i can have a proper play after work in the sun. Any other ideas in the mean time? Thanks guys!

Get some carby cleaner and have a spray around where you think the leak is. This will confirm if it is.

Thanks for the idea stockman, just went outside to give it a test and nothing, totally coated the thing too?? Nothing at all like when i sprayed it all down the guts of the carby? Im 100% positive i could hear something sucking from the right hand side of the carby when i fully covered the air inlet. Could it be possible for it to be the coil or leads causing the drop out?

Try spraying the inlet manifold around the head and the base of the carby. Also check that non of the vacume lines have come off.

Ill have to give it a better look in the daylight. I did spray the carby cleaner all over the place though, used a hell of alot too lol. Think its worth the shot getting a new coil/leads and plugs? Havnt done them in a while? What kind of price would i be looking at to take it to a shop just in and out?
