Post subject:  chassis surface rust repair and paint

hi

i am just starting the LWB build :woohoo: (yes i will start a build thread with pics for this one once i get the internet hooked up at home) so when i got it, the body was/is stuffed so it is going to the dump :( . last night i removed the body from the chassis and have notice it has a fair bit of surface rust on the chassis. i was thinking i could just sand it all back and coat it with some black rust kill paint or something.

what else would you guys think i should do the stop the rust going further eg rust converter, primer then paint? what products would you use?

thanks greg

Wire wheel the entire chassis.

Then buy some POR-15 and go for gold. But make sure you do any repairs, mods to the chassis first.

If the rust is bad enough to require the use of rust converter, you may be best looking for a new chassis.

Por15 is good. Dear, but good. Follow their process.

Spray it with a cheap air gun and compressor. Make sure you clean the gun out after with each use. It dries rubbery gooey an then goes rock hard.

My chassis was rusty but it came up good. My front right body mounts was rusty/pitted from brake fluid and sand..Really need to strip everything back then see how bad things are.

Killrust doesn't do shit.

Mine was in killrust undercoat with rust converted areas it was ok, but the other 3/4 of the chassis, It was still rusting. I had to strip it all again.

PPC import it
http://www.ppcco.com.au/

Locations in Qld

I love how it says on the cans..Partial Ingredients not known
Im surprised this stuff is still allowed in the country.

Wear gloves for every product. I didnt, My hand peeled. I later worked out it was the Marine clean. MAkes sure you wear a mask if spraying, and make sure it seals good, mine didnt seal around my nose letting air in, i had a black nose, VERY hard to get off. If it dries, Its permanent on you for a few days.
