hi all this may be a bit of a noob question, but you know the black cylinder that is on the right hand side in the engine bay? in a 1.3l 92 sierra. i was wondering what is it there for? cheers.

Charcoal canister. Recycles fuel vapor or some crap.

is it needed? and well not if your facing the engine bay from the front its then on the right

It is also part of the breather system, that lets air back into tank, as you use fuel. If its not there, a full tank of fuel, and parked in sun, can lead to fuel leak and loss. It can also syphon out your fuel in a roll or flop.
Mine clogged up, so was removed temporarily. I put a breather pipe on tank, ran it high up on car, never had a problem since
