| Post subject: | Auto Vitara - Gearbox/Dif Problem Diagnosis |
DifHi guys, I bought a 96Vit swb auto. I noticed when I'm on the highway, and I take my foot off the accelrator, it sort of feels like it engine brakes or shifts down a gear. I'm pretty sure its not shifting down a gear as the revs dont increase, but it does feel like the gearbox or diff is doing something. Is this normal or do I have a suspicous issue that needs further investigation. Cheers Sam |

I have a 96 swb auto as well, but this is one thing that I haven't noticed. It does a lot of clunking and bumping off road, but I have never noticed the symptom you have described. Hence, I think you may have a problem, and sorry, I can't offer you any advice. Kev. |

I took the vit in to a diff specialist and a trans specialist. They tested the car, The trannie guy said the trannie was perfect. He did feel a little resistance when you take ur foot off the accelerator at bout 80 k's, but said it was probably due to the gearing. Said there was a slight slight whine from the diff. Took it into the diff guy, he said he could only hear the whine when going about 20-30ks. Said the bearings may be on their way out, but its not normal for the whine to go away so he thinks its fine, and just drive it. If it gets worse I may have to do the bearings in the dif, but it should be sweet. He also said that it drove fine and couldn't explain the resistance, but said it may be normal for the vits. Brakes sticking? Tyres flat? Uni's half seized? |

None of the above. Car drives fine, just feels a bit funny for 1/2 a second every now and then. But very very hard to detect. |
