has any one ever redrilled a set of 6studd sunnys to 5studd? i know a whole bunch of drifters that have done it....
it should be as easy as marking drilling the holes and cutting a small taper for the wheel nuts...?

Flame suit on.

as you said, it's pretty common to get rims re drilled.

here a slightly different take on it... subaru guys drill the hubs to take the 6 stud pattern. http://offroadingsubarus.com/6stud_conversion.html

It sounds that easy in theory, in practice though i know with multi fit rims, they often use 1 whole the same and redril the other 3/4/5 depending on the stud pattern.

i doubt the zook to hilux/cruiser pattern would be that easy. Being a smaller PCD i imagine the above isn't possible. And drilling 5 new holes is the only option. spacing these so they dont interfere with a existing hole would be hard, and possibly leave a weak point.

yeah I get the feeling I might have to weld up 1 or 2 of the stock holes. going to use a old disk as a template...

Are they beadlock rims?

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy new 5x139.7 wheels, they're only ~$60

budget!
and you wont get -30 15x8's for that!! there more like $110 a rim

Fair call, but do you need a 15x8? Anything under 12.5" wide is better on a 7" rim imo.

I'd prefer them. not sure if you have scene but I have challenged myself to have a capable wheeling truck for under 1.5k (proving a point)

I'm running 32x11.5s so would like 8s. and decent back spacing is a bonus.

Sell the 6 stud rims and buy 5 studs with that money?

I'm loving the build idea but don't compromise on safety to prove a point..

tried hey no one wants them.

considering I have scene 700hp drift cars run them and its a pretty commo practice, the strength of the rim may be slightly reduced, however wil be well more than required for a 1000kg 80hp Suzuki!

I was more wondering if anyone had actually done it.

Wouldnt it be easier to get the whole stud pattern welded in like when they flip a rim?

And I'm also gonna jump on the unsafe bandwagon... It just doesn't seem right

How do you plan on pitching out the holes accurately and not just hill billy Tasmanian close enough?

mark out-drill-cut taper.

this isn't going on the road btw.

not close enough to be a proper job.

I would do it in the mill tubby

I agree, however I don't have a mill.
I believe I can get within 0-3mm more than close enough considering its a bush truck and tires arnt exactly perfect these days!

I hope that's meant to read 0.3mm and not 0-3mm.

ever watched wheels on a balancer?

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

Couldnt you at least knock up a bush that drops into the holes on the rim so you get your centre punch located properly(ish) in the centre?

As much as I am used to using a mk1 eyeball- you really need to be accurate for this job.

Go for drill press as a minimum, and a tapered cutter of some type must be available at an engineering supplier like Blackwoods or similar.

If welding up the holes DO NOT weld with tyres fitted to the rims.

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

I was planning on marking pcd the whole way round and useing disk as a template for stud spacing..

why can you not weld up holes with tires on?

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

DON'T redrill the wheels.. ....Steel rims don't have anywhere near enough meat around the holes to do it safely unlike some alloys...

Redrill the hub/rotor/drums OR fit adaptors....

0-3 mm lining up Is that with three eyes closed or just one???

Have seen what happens when people have tried this on dodgy backyard vehicles. Its not good especially when you have to drag a car back to the pits on just one wheel.

There is an easier way. MUCH safer and just as cheap.

You have the 15x8's and obviously you have the suzi standard wheels. So why not cut the centres from the standard wheel and weld them into the 15x 8 in an offset you require.

Easiest way is first cut through the rim of the standard wheels so that the centre is untouuched. Leave the little part of the priginal rim there.

If you can just try and grind the welds out of the 15 x 8 so that you can sell the centres to someone else. Then for even more offset you can flip the rims too so that the bulk of the rim is out. Just tack the centres in first andspin them up on the font hub lookingfor hop and any sideway movement. When all good weld solid.

Or just buy Damo's six stud suzi hubs for $100. Then when are sick of this projec then you can resell later.

This is why:

There is a vid somewhere (couldn't find it) of a tyre blowing nearly 30mins after the rim was welded.

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

I was going to buy them but there sold!

cutting the centers now there's a idea...

got any pics of how it failed? I have scene a whole lot of them (prob 1/3-1/2 the drift cars down here run them as I said with a good 10x the power) I'd like to know exactly why it failed.

wow that's pretty hektic, you would think they would take the valve out before even starting that kind of job?

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

i vote for cutting some stock centre out and welding them in if its a bush basher. stock centres will look cool on big offset and you could then tweak the offset a bit more in your favour.

or jas beet me to it but was gonna say adaptors.

being the same pcd setting them up in a lathe and marking the pcd would work if you then stepped it out correctly but its just not a good option without the right gear.

Post subject:  Re: re-drilling wheels

ok so if I use one of the standard holes, will the other 5 land away from the stock holes? surely someone here is clever enough to work out spacing. given the fact I can use one stock hole it does make it a much easier job.
