Post subject:  Need help from regarding oil leak?? I have uploaded pictures

Hi guys.

Firstly I have a 1996 soft top Sierra.

I have recently noticed an oil drip from the face of the Bel housing and rear of the sump cover.

I've wiped a bit off, but as you see in the photos that is the region where the leak is coming from?
Also a bit of oil from the gap looking thing at the bottom of the case? Please enlightened me of what this is?

As you can see i am by no means a mechanic, so any Ideas of what seal/gasket this might be and what would be required to repair.

Thanks

sump gasket or rear main seal

have a look down the back of the motor, if is wet up there as well then it could be the distributor o-ring or rocker cover gasket. start with the highest seal and work down. if its completely dry all the way down, then yes it could be the rear main crankshaft seal or sump gasket.

FYI - put the image address in [img]***[/img] tags and they'll come up in your post. They can be copied straight from Photobucket too, they'll be in the "IMG" box.

Its not the Distributor O-ring or rocker cover gasket as i replaced them both recently and stopped their leaks. The engine is oil free downward until you reach the area depicted.

And thanks for the responses so far!

There ya go ;)

It's coming from above the sump, so that's fine. Check all your bellhousing bolts, one could be loose and allowing some seepage. If they're all tight and you can pinpoint the start it could be a rear main.

+1 vote for the rear main.

Where would that oil be seeping from?

If it's not coming from above the bellhousing (dist O ring, valve cover, head gasket), I think you're down to the rear main or the oil pan.
