can anyone identify and explain install of the red circled item? Came with rear wheel bearing kit (also the retainer not pictured) and the axles didnt have one installed before. I dont think its the oil seal protector, oil seal protector stays in the diff housing and just prevents you from resting axle on seal during install?

That is a spacer that goes between the bearing and outer axle end for a narrow track. WT sierra's have this on the bearing itself. It is not the oil seal protector. I dare say the image you have is from a WT.

Some WT bearing kits come with that ring as an integral part of the bearing inner race.
Your kit has it seperate but is still quite usable.
Fit the backing plate then ring then bearing. Make sure the ring has the chamfered edge facing the axle flange.
