How does the plate behind the plastic trim come off? Looks to be tacked on.

There are spot welds, best way to remove them is with a spot weld drill bit.

Drill it out and obviously you'd be left with holes.

Its a special drill bit, if you do it right there won't be any holes, would much prefer that than something that makes lots of sparks near your nice paint.

Trade tools have spot weld bits. I paid about $20-25 ea. for mine.

Judging by the wear on my set, I used a 6.5mm spot weld bit to remove my coily sills.

Don't do that - if you use a 6.5mm bit and are very precise I found you are left with just a tiny bit of weld that can be broken off easily.

I only drilled through 1 when I tried an 8mm bit!

I ground mine, worked well, but obviously you need to used some filler to smooth off the grinder marks, even the really small ones. I would use the spot weld drill tip if I ever did it again.

well thanks for the help, i think i will use the 6.5mm bit, not fussed on how it turns out as i plan to paint 100mm from the bottom up in black.
