Ive been having engine light problems for a couple of months now, and this time its not going away. Ive done a bit of research and could be a few things. Could be the oxygen sensor because its chewing a lot more fuel than it should be (about 200 to 220 out of a tank). Or it could be the crank angle sensor as it was having an idle shiver in the past (but its not doing it now). So i was wondering if anyone knows how to get the error codes out of a jimny without using a computer, or could someone who has a computer kindly help me out?
Thanks. jimny 2005 vvt manual 85,000kms

What's it like at highway speed for over 1/2 an hour? Crank and cam sensors are common.

Reason I ask is that if it's a faulty sensor you won't know during daily city driving as the computer will be in a default mode, once you get up to highway speed for 20 mins or more it will go into a "limp home" mode. It will cough and splutter and die, give a chance to cool down and will start up and seem fine. If you get back up to highway speed it will do the same again but if you jump onto a "b" road and stay under 80k it will be fine.

it's not doing anything like this, but I will have to try it out before I rule it out. Thanks for your suggestion.

No problem, like you say, just trying to help you rule things out.

Paper clip into the computer plug will give you the codes. There are a couple of good threads about it

^^^ what he said, i've lost track of the number of times i've posted it + moag drew heaps of pretty pics & everything...
FYI, the plug is attached to some electrical strings.
sounds more like o2 sensor than cam/crank sensor.

Faulty crank or cam angle sensors usually cause a no start situation, so I doubt that is the problem. As suggested look up the procedure found elsewhere on this site for reading the codes, or else you'll just end up chasing your tail. I agree with Atari. Sounds more like o2 sensor or coolant temp sensor

couple of months @ 200kms to the tank rather than 350kms So basically you are halving your fuel economy So say you do 200 kms a week driving that's a tank of fuel. Say a tank of fuel is 40 litres cost = $1.40 a litre x 40 litres = $56.00 for fuel per week $56 x 4 weeks x 3 months = $672
You are using fuel at about an 40% increase so that's an extra cost of $268 which it would have cost you to take it to a mechanic in the first place for a diagnosis. I know suzuki owners are tight arse mofos ( cause I am too) but really get it fixed. Fuel is way to expensive now to waste.
I am sure you can work it out with the codes on here and the tech info, but if you read it and think its too hard then please take it somewhere. Could just be a dodgy connection too.

Sounds like o2 sensor but check the AirMas sensor as well sometimes the plug comes loose and muck gets in the connector. If was in ADL could of pluged in the SDT tool but just jumping the cable would tell you everything you will need to know.

Got the SDT from Sico tools. It works but quite fussy as it detects the brake switch when in ECU mode which brings up a communication error, so have to be quick enough to remove the brake switch line to start communication , think the Tech2 which u can also get from Sico would work better.

So basically i have read through the document that Atari put up. I know how to get the error code i just don't know how and where to bridge it. So where do i put the wire or paperclip to start getting the flashes. I don’t want to shove wires where they are not meant to be and cause more problems. I read through another thread that Shep made and it doesn’t explain how/where to bridge it either. So if anyone has actually done this to a jimny or a simular car, could you please explain how you did it or put a picture up. I would really appreciate it, as i would like to start using the car for more than trips to the corner shop. Thanks Doug.

got some good news and bad news. i think ive found the plug that everyone is talking about. but it is not exactly the same. i only found this plug that is similar looking but only has two wires in it and that's the only plug in the left foot well. and then i found a plug in the middle behind the 4wd buttons but doesn't look any thing like it. this is the one in the foot well, plug has got a black wire and a pink wire and this is the one behind the 4wd buttons have you got any clues of what i can do? thanks Doug

ok ive just gone down and looked at an 03' non vvt jimny and its got this plug, facing the plug its got a grey wire top middle, red bottom right, pink bottom middle and black bottom left. but my 05' vvt jimny has the same plug but only two wires. facing the plug black is bottom left and pink is bottom middle. has anyone got any clues as to what i can do. i would really appreciate it as i dont want to pay someone $110 to tell me what the code is, when i can waste $110 on an oxygen sensor and crank angle for the same price which are the two most likely problems.

If its a 05 model it may be OBD2 (If Lucky but came in 2006) in that case you can use a OBD2 scan tool.
It might be worth spending 15 bucks on a Elm327 bluetooth OB2 dongle and installing some OBD2 software on your phone and seeing if it can get any fault codes.
Normally any OBD2 Cars should have a OBD2 Compliant sticker on the bonnet, check for that, Non OBD2 cars have a different emission sticker.
If it is OBD2 the wires diag wires might not be there, that we non OBD cars use to get the engine light to flash.

oxy sensors are a common replacement item. How many has yours had in 85000kms. There a bit like exhaust components such as cats. People don't change them until they become an issue. Usually 1800kms from help. Buy one any way as its probably overdue. The excessive fuel use is usually a sensor issue.

02 sensors last 60,000 to 100,000 k mine failed at 140,000k.
Look under the bonet for timing and emision sticker see if it says obd2 anywhere. But if ya 2005 model and missing the service.diag wire you may have a good chance u can just plug a cheap scan tool in. Won't do any harm. If run scan and says communication failed you will know its not obd2. You need the ignition to be in the on position to scan and diagnose.

There is a DLC (Data Link Connctor) with only black and Pink on some Jimnys, Thats for diagnosing the ABS. You need to find a similar plug with 4 wires. Probably Red/Green, White/Blue, Pink & Black, but don't quote me on that. Comes out of the ECU, so definately going to be on the passenger side footwell against the left hand side, probably fairly high up. Have proper rummage around the ECU. It'll be there somewhere, and it'll look similar to the ABS plug you already found I think.

Mate I will have a look right now but I'm pretty sure there's no other plug I've had a pretty good look. But if someone with vvt jimny 05' to 07' with glx non abs could look in there's to check if they have a plug for future reference for my self and also others I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help squibby.
Edit Just had a look on the left hand side foot well of the car except for the one in the picture I have shown.
