Post subject:  Grand Vitara CV boots
Noticed when mucking around under the GV this arvy that the cv boots are in terrible condition! Passenger side inner is split and flicking oil all over the place, allo the others look like they aren't far behind it! :(

Has anybody had any luck sourcing reasonable priced non genuine boots in Aust? I have found them on Rock auto in the us. But the freight is around 5 tims the price of the parts! 8O

Also I am assuming the front springs and struts etc have to be removed to make the struts accessible? Not lookling forward to that. :(

LHS you can do without pulling the thing completely apart, the RHS you will need to pull it right down to get it out.

I replaced the outer cv boots on a 95, 4 door, V6 a few months ago. I contacted greg at 4wd_products (E-bay) with the following response.

G'day Sean, I haven't been able to get to the bottom of what boots suit the Vitara V6. It was only last Saturday that I called into a nearby Suzuki specialist wrecker to check this very matter, but they didn't have drive shafts from a V6 Vitara in stock so that I could check/measure. So as we speak we don't actually have CV boots for the Vitara V6. I'll keep trying but if you need urgently, I will let you down.

might want to look at his e-bay store though, has preety much all other models!

With this I trundled down to repco expecting to pay a fortune but lo and behold they charged me $15 a boot from memory and had the outer boots in stock!

Also after trolling through millions. . . . no BILLIONS of forum posts all over the internet these helped me more than any words could.

I dont have this problem as every new shaft i put in has new boots on it.....Maybe if theCV's didnt break so easily id have to find some......

Thank you for all the info guys. Have wrapped it in duct tape until I get to it over the xmas break. Got Down the local Repco and got some ordered dirt Cheap! (Thanks Tazmanier). Looks like there is a fair bit of maintenence to be done on the ld girl over xmas anyway.

A month ago a stick got caught up under my sliders ... a huge stick that rubbed on the rear tyre and the same stick wedged into the outer cv on the passenger side. After snapping this 2 inch thick stick out there was greeae on the end and yep ... tore me boot.

So I tried this on the weekend after buying a set of 4 (for both sides) from the uk off eBay for something like $40 delivered and comes with a giant cone to get the cv boots over the cvs. They're universal fit and you just cut the outsides to fit your axle and cv outer as they taper in.

In the YouTube video there is another tool that the guy holds with his foot to spread the universal boot over the cone which doesn't come with the above mentioned kit. Needless to say I tried to get the boot over the cone and after a fair effort (read shot loads) the boot split and yeah ... fuck it and decided to outsource the rest.

$80 and the cv workshop split the axle from the cvs, cleaned, regreased, put the new boots on and pressed it all back together.

The mechanic said they are were all amazed that I gave it a go myself and added:
Just replacing the boot only is like throwing a hand full of dirt in there and expecting to replace the unit 12 months later.
The only person making money off universal boots is the manufacturer because no workshop would do it like that.
And the flexible boot they use so tou can it get over the cv just melts over time and disinergrates.

The axle was ready to pick up later that afternoon and the epic struggle I failed just to try and get one boot on this way I'm glad that's all done and have no hesitation how I'm going to do the otherside ie outsource it.

Now to fix the orange greased up hubs (there's a great link on hear for that so I'll be right there) and I reckon my bearings need to be replaced. Is that a case of pull the whole hub off and take that into a shop to press out and put a new one in?

GREG HAS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought a set for my GV last week, cost me $31 delivered can't complain, have to fit them this weekend.
