My DD Sierra check engine light has been on since I bought it, the previous owner said it came on after he replaced a temp switch.

The old switch has TT-10 and 76 and 30 stamped on it. Looks to origanally have had two wires coming out of it. He apparently replaced it after damaging the wires.

Does anyone recognize the switch? I can't find one the same, doesn't help that I don't know the series of gti motor.

The switch in there now is the only one I can find reference to.

If that looks to be correct what plug do I need to look for to be able to read the error codes?

I hope this works. :)

Here's a pic and some text that I saved from the net a while ago. I don't think the site is available now. The pic shows the sensors around the thermostat housing.

"
Below are the sensors on the GTI Engine what they do and where they go.

(1) This is the water temp sensor for the instrument cluster the plug from the Sierra harness connects here,
(2) This is the thermo sensor switch which connects to the thermo fan,
(3) This is the water temp sensor which connects to the original GTI wiring harness or a aftermarket ECU,
(4) This is another water temp sensor do not connect anything to this.

Sorry for the hi-jak but is there any common reasons for a check engine light to come on.
I have an mk2 gti swift and went rallying the other day. Hit a huge pot hole at 100kmph on a dirt track and now the check engine light is on (dissapears when I get on the throttle, even slightly). Car also idles quite high too, about 2500rpm

Have you bridged the diagnostic port to get the error code?

Shep:
In a Seirra you'll have to locate the red/black wire (I think) from the ECU and ground is somewhere. That will give you any error codes that the computer may have.
If no one else pipes up about the wire colour, i'll be able to check for you this arvo.

To confirm, red/blk is the diagnostic wire, however, I've just realised you have a mk1 engine which may be different.

matty_wall , please could you not post if you are unsure , this is what makes forums a pain in the arse for not only the OP but for people searching in future.

the mk2/3 uses a violet wire with a yellow stripe (pinout a22) that is grounded to make the check engine light to flash . the check engine light itself is powered by ignition on power (black with a white stripe) goes to the lamp , then to a violet wire back to the ecu (pinout b2).

now the mk1 im not exactly sure about the wire colours , but its a single wire that has a round socket like the thermo fan switch and i dont know the pinouts off the top of my head so ill leave it at that.

Losfer. Do you know anything about the mk1 temp switch? I have checked 4 or 5 manufacturer books and they only list part numbers for mk2/3, nothing for mk1. Local Suzuki shop(300km away) is no help a I don't have a vin#

As far as I know genuine Suzuki only. Part number 13650-86500 price $121.50. I don't have a resistance graph for it but previous discussions over the years suggest mk2/3 is not compatable even if you change the loom socket.
