Post subject:  Air filter

Hi iv been running over numerous forums all today looking for a good air filter for off road use, i wasnt too fussed until i read this 4

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12199&hilit=air+filter

Now i am worried about destroying my engine prematurely!

I have a 32/36 weber carb on my '93 Vit (fitted before i got the car) and cant get hold of a standard intake so now I was going to go for something simple like a K@N or GREEN and mock up a set up like this chap boris did for a snorkel...

http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php ... tupperware

seems simple and as though it could work nicely... thoughts on this set up??? but mostly i would like some guidance for an air filter that can handle the dusty/sandy tracks of WA!

thanks guys.

Oiled filters like k+n are not ideal for off-road applications.

HI Alexxx, yea thats what i understand from what iv read. but I cant find anyone saying anything good about an air filter, only stating bad ones.

also looking to use this to attach a filter then box that in to a snorkel .....

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

Does that setup come with a filter. Webers are hard to match filters for. If you were to get that I'd take it into any good auto parts store and just match a good old paper filter to it. IMHO paper filters are the only way to go for off roading.

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

no that set up is basically a 90deg angle for a snorkel so both throats in the weber get direct air ( from what i understand!!)

So for instance.... just a quick 2 second search, you think this would be a better filter to attach to the 3" air intake pipe?

Dont know if anybody has any info on AEM DryFlow, they do a "brute Force" version for off road use??

http://www.aemintakes.com/store/default.aspx

I think this may be the way to go, its a dry oil free filter? found this on ebay for a good price....

Thoughts people??

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

I only use K&N, no data has yet proven to me that they are not good, all I ever read is people saying, do not use, but nothing to back up their claim.

IMO K&N is a good free flowing filter, oiled properly it is a wonderful particulate filter.

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

Suziblu, there have been links posted to show they dont work but I'm not getting into it in this thread

Daly87, an option might be that setup and the airbox out of an EFI vitara, then you can plumb a snorkel into that easy enough

Or find a truck parts place and have a look at some small Donaldson airfilter boxes that will fit in the space you have

Thanks for the replies guys.

I think I may go with the AEM :

To me, it just seems an easier set up then a donaldson Pre-Cleaner full of oil ( of course i know nothing about them so its probably just the fear of the unknown)

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

nobody said anything about a pre cleaner full of oil

Donaldson make all sorts of filter boxes that you hook your pipe up to, an enclosed filter will always work better

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

Atari it was Gwagonsteve rant that made me confused haha the whole 3 page discussion just puts down the likes of K&N etc and states that standard is best but doesn't give any recommendations for other options and surely ALLL after market air filters cant be bad? and with me already having a weber when purchasing the car i cant find a standard carb to replace it and get stock filter.

Thanks Royce, iv only knew of the pre cleaner type. Ill go check that out now.

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

Go have alook at some pics of an EFI Vitara engine bay, all fits nice, you can run a snorkel (and the stock setup with no snorkel would forward water at a higher level than an open one), get a new air filter anywhere, dont have to worry about cops getting snarky over an open filter etc etc

Prob pick it all up for $20 in the for sale section

there is a very smart man on outers or there was that proved they are puss (k&N ) many times over , but no one seems to want to hear this.
this job was to test things like air and oil filters but sadly people still aruge the point with him

Post subject:  Re: Air filter

So from what I can understand you have a vit and a 32/36, also a top hat to fit your carb??

Sounds like you need "an" airfilter to fit inline with your airintake? Something like a cheap airbox from a wrecker that fits in your eng bay with similar holes (inlet / outlet) to your intake.

Something with a common airbox with a reas factory filter that is cheap to replace on a reg basis....

If you have a link, I would love to read this. Steve can be biased at times. I have read his "findings" on K&N, but for all his words, I can find many that contradict.

Have yet to read of anything that is IMO substantial.

IF i were to go back to bulldust country, yes, I would consider K&N lacking, but in most driving applications, dust is large, and so, captured.

Many test K&N without oil.

Read the first page, first post, bloke hates K&N, tells of F1 that lost two donks, but he cannot say who, confidentiality an all that.

OK, I have undeniable proof that there is life on Uranus, but those who have discovered have asked me not to tell, so you will just have to trust me.

Sorry, nothing to see there.

Seems we are just :deadhorse: with no back up.

Everyone will now berate me as normal, I will just go on using K&N as I have done for 20 or so years, without a drama, from suzis to HSV tuned LS1s

Ok, im tired, its my bed time, near lights out, gads, before 7pm.

Th way HSV explained it to me, go for the biggest filter you can fit, (which I have always done, fro a piccaniny with first car) this way, there is less velocity across the medium, therefore more time to trap particulate matter. My last LS1 tune cost me a bit over $5k, the air filter was K&N, as set up, was a monster, bout 5 times the surface area of OEM.

You have to believe someone, I believe someone, others believe someone else.

We are talking about a 4x4 vehicle here. This assumes it will be used in more dusty environments than a HSV road car..

$5,000 tune, you are kidding me right?... it's not a top fuel drag car is it?

naa, bigger injectors, bigger MAF, bigger valley cover, customized computer, bigger throttle body, far bigger cold air dam/filter, dyno package, redesigned gear changes.

Huge diff, at legal road speeds, better fuel economy, down from 12.7 Liters per hundred to a tad over 9 liters per hundred, when you put your foot down, 320rwkw near tears ya head off.

that's a little bit more than a dyno run for a tune.

I agree whole hardheartedly, but, principle still applies doesn't it, biggest air filter you can get, slow moving air across the medium.

How many use their 4by only off road in superfine (bulldust) conditions, mostly its blacktop driving.

My toy does a few hundred Kay per week, when Im home, thats not often, I wash and oil it before every week off runs.

Once again, I am sorry to have voiced an opinion, seems everytime I open my mouth I get shit on bad. Not necessarily directed at you JR.

Yea tis mate, like I said, new far bigger MAF, throttle body, cold air damn, valley cover, injectors, they were free for a 5k dyno run.

Exhaust was extra.

You do not go from an engine of 245 kw to 320rwkw for pennies. KW and RWKW are far different.

yeah, but you failed to mention all the work done on supporting mods when you said

bit like me saying my tyres cost $13,000... cause that's how much it cost to make them fit.

seriously though, when you get a chance, have a proper read of that thread. it's given me second thoughts about the K&N that i have in mine.

that was AFTER your first post, and was a reply to when i asked if it was a top fuel drag car, you didn't mention ANY mods apart from the K&N filter in your original $5k tune statement.
