hey guys, got a jimny with 180000km on the clock. and its been throwing up a check engine light recently. she has oil, she has water, she has spark and there is no audible difference coming from the motor (no knocks weird noises). the only real issues weve noticed is its down on economy, smokey on start up (suspected valve stem seals) and i crawled under the car the other night and noticed a decent fresh leak from the back of the block or sump onto the gear box. its not using oil at a rapid rate, so i dont think this is the issue.... any ideas of what could be throwing the check engine light up? any way to double check what it is with the dang fangled computer thingo?? thanks in advance |

Yes, you need to ground the diagnostic terminal and the CE light will flash the error code for the problem the computer is seeing. I don't have the Jimny FSM, but I'm sure someone will chime in with the procedure. Steve. |

quick on the reply, thanks steve! i dont think i mentioned the light flashes on sporadically, it goes away after a while and wont show up again for a week or so. now, as you may have guessed im pretty clueless outside the basic servicing spectrum. do i need a specific tool to read this error code, or there's a terminal somewhere in the car that i ground out, and that will display an error code on the trip computer?? |

The jimny guys haven't had much luck finding the diagnostic plug from memory. There were some good posts by moag, search for 'codes' & posts by him, not sure if it was for the G or M series though. I've posted how to do it many times, search error codes & posts by me. On my phone, otherwise I'd link them.

the plugs under the glove box left hand side. a white plug with 6 holes. bridge the top middle and bottom left with a paper clip and turn on ignition and count the flashes. ie. flash flash flash is 3. |

bugger! puts us in a bit of a pickle as the light only flicks on, stays on for a while, then goes away. may have to pursue the scantool option if they can read previous issues |

you should still be able to pull the codes, mine are stored on the ECU until you disconnect the battery... surely the G13bb is the same. |

Only current codes are accessible using the jumper method. If the MIL has gone off then you need a scan tool to access the stored codes, Suzuki refer to them as 'history codes'. |

when mine throws an o2 error code it will come on under constant throttle, lift off or give it more & it goes away & will not light the MIL light constantly. i can bridge the diagnoistic plug & get the codes & will keep spitting them out the number of times it's happened, as it's a recurring error been the same deal with my SV420 & SV620?

If the MIL has gone off then you need a scan tool to access the stored codes, Suzuki refer to them as 'history codes'. just to show i'm not crazy, i knocked this up today.  fire it up & the MIL light goes away straight after start up, shut it down, bridge the diagnostic terminal & turn it over to ign it spits out code after code after code i stopped recording them after about a minute but they kept coming. i can get the MIL light to flash under the same conditions virtually any day of the week & they're all either left & right o2 sensor codes. my SV420 did the exact same thing even when the CMP was playing up, would flash the MIL light & disappear, bridging the diagnostic plug would spit codes like it was morse code.

Video is blocked here but I'll have a look later. I have an H25 ECU I can try this on, maybe its peculiar to Hitachi or an Australian requirement, I've never seen that happen on any Suzuki ECU, usually once you clear the fault the MIL will revert to a Code 12 but the stored code will remain in memory. If I'm working on an Hitachi is usually either an immo problem or a GTi which doesn't have a serial link, I'd be interested to hear what other peoples experiences have been. |

Hi all, I’m new to the forum. I have a 2001 jimny that is giving me some grief, the previous owner had swapped out the M13a engine for a m16a, It hasn’t been running right the whole time I’ve had it and the engine light is on, I have done the paper clip truck and got two flashing codes, A 15 and an 18, I’m sure the 15 is water temp sensor but I can’t find what the 18 is for?? Does anyone have any idea?? Cheers Max |

on the M13a engine (unsure if VVT and non VVT have same codes) 15 is Cam Position Sensor and 18 is Air Intake Sensor circuit malfunction. |
