So i have an 01 non vvt jimny, running 235's.

I purchased the car like this.

Firstly it feels pretty darn slow. I used to have a m13a in my WT sierra with 31's and 1L transfer and it didn't feel this slow.

Is my motor just a dud?
Should I go m15a? (anyone done this conversion, is it even remotely worth while?)
Should I put a newer gearbox in with closer gearing as 5th seems borderline unusable.

Motor has snorkel and 2 inch exhaust which appear to be the only modifications.

What differences are there ecu wise etc between vvt and non vvt, i.e if i went to a m18 what changes to loom etc would be needed, I can wire motors etc no problem but the simpler the better.

Kind of feel like just being done with it and going beams 3sge. But again would like to keep it simple.

Thanks in advance.

With the options so far ie, gearing or engine. I think the engine is the cheaper option. M18 swap.

The other option is the ORA transfer case swap.

Its really up to you as they both involve a bit of work. Research research research!

FYI power doesn't equal gearing.

gearing is achieved with a transfer for when its actually needed, i dont want to sit at 95k @ 5k rpm. It feels like my problems could be solved with a bit more torque.

Are the differences between vvt and non vvt pretty much just ecu? and engine loom.

also when you say gearing what do you think is the best way.

just thought i would mention the seller said that the transfer case had reduction gears, but this would only effect low range. Just making this point so its not such an easy decision to swap transfers.

The only people that think gearing isn't the answer are people that haven't driving a car with corected gearing. Sierra gearing affects both low and high range, I am certain jimny transfers work the same way.

If you don't want to fix the gearing then go back to stock tyre size, a bigger motor or more power will just fry ya clutch and brake stuff.

APIO make a gear that only effects lowrange, but it's near 2.5K to buy... So I doubt that.

If you put a set of jimny reduction gears in it shouldn't rev that high.

I know that my G13bb is a very torqueless motor even compared to my G13A carby motor, it could be a trait carried through, but I'm pretty sure your not the only one suffering from it. IE. my Jim would stall out on hill climbs on 205s

It might be a dud, have you done a compression test? does it use oil? do you use the right oil in it?
air filter clean? plugs good? check engine light isnt on?

What type of tyres? mud tyres seem to drag things down much worse than an All terrain and I wouldnt expect that it could sit on 100 all day long without a lot of gear shifting

I think in non VVT ones the non VVT M16 is the pick, Mud muncher? has one in his

^^^ yeah I think for a non-vvt the M16 is the pic.... I think there is a thread around here where they talk about it and say that for non-vvt M16 and vvt is M18 the pic

now, to really know if you have gears or not (according to your seller)... at what rpms are you doing at 100km/h? (gps speed)
having a non-vvt, you should be doing 4000-4200rpm for stock size tyres... or a correct gearing

Hmm,

yeah well at around 100 i sit between 3.5 and 4.

Tires are 235 dueler A/T.

I do believe in fixing gearing and playing around with it. But it seems to me that the gearing is close enough to being fine. If I had a bit more torque it would be fine.
You are thinking about the clutch and everything too far into extremes. But I agree in that power isn't always the solution.

So I might do some research on m16s then. I don't need a world of difference, and if I had the funds I would do gearing a motor, probably will in time. I have another toy that gets most of my hobby fund, this car is just meant to be a daily to drive when I dont feel like riding in the rain and a week end fun rig. I don't want to get too carried away with it like I have with every other car I have had. Maybe I am getting old...

How much bigger are those tyres than standard ones?

why not put standard tyres back on for daily driving?

I reckon my geared Jimny with stock motor would pull just as well, or maybe better than, a M18 Jimny without gears.

when you say 100 is that what the speedo says? If so you're doing more like 110 and 3.5-4k RPM is way too low.
Suzukis like to rev.

If you go for the M18 without adressing the gearing you will end up breaking something in the drive train. Do the gearing first. I agree entirely with Zukenutter.

the gearing suggestion to information ratio is a bit off in this thread.

I stock G13 engine with 235's and at 100km (speedo reads 92) i am reving at 4k.

You need to remember they are small engines, that LOVE to rev hard.

As a solid bit of advice, a 1L case/4.16 reduction gears and the Sierra Tcase swap kit will get you sweet sweet onroad (very drivable) and better then now offroad. I use to run this on my 99jimny and now I've got 30s and I drive to Sydney-Tamworth-whereever.

The 1300cc will be working hard and can only produce a certain amount of power, if once your gearing is bettered and you still hate it engine swap it! Tho, it's a bit of an uphill battle.

Using a kit like the one from Off Road Armory makes swapping in a Sierra case pretty easy and you'll have a large selection of ratio options.

Swapping in more power will help but you'll fail to get the most from it if you don't get the ratios right first.

Your M13a Sierra ran better because the 1L transfer geared it down by about 10%. Also the Sierra is lighter.

Granted it is a Sierra however it is the same issue. My swb Sierra has 235/75/15 tyres with stock gearing and has a worked and very healthy GTI motor which I reckon would be easly twice the power of a stock g13.

My lwb Sierra with 6.5 trans case, 33x10.5 tyres and a very stuffed g13a has a higher top speed and accelerates from 80 to 130 with relative ease. The swb has little chance of doing 130 even though it would be 250kg lighter and have at least twice the power. In the bush the swb actually isn't much fun in technical stuff as it must be driven quicker and with lots of clutch slip to go anywhere.in comparison The lwb will idle up a 100cm step.

With a Suzuki, well jimny's and sierra's any way, gearing is worth a crapload more then power. Seriously try and go for a drive in one with corrected gearing and see the difference.
