Hey guys, brought a jimny a week or 2 ago has a snorkel on it with a foam pre filter on it, it is very restrictive and went for a drive yesterday and it started pouring down and when the pre filter got wet it started chocking the engine... Should I just run no prefilter and turn the intake thing around and use my air compressor to blow the paper filter out wen driving in the dust?

I would only put the prefilter on when driving in the dust.

Or look at a donaldson type precleaner

Throw the foam pre filter away. They are restrictive and require too much servicing.

As per jdk81, of you want a pre cleaner, fit a donaldson (type - there's lots of copies) pre filter.

I wouldn't really recommend blowing out a paper filter with compressed air. It can damage the paper result in dust getting on the "wrong" side of the filter. If you wish to "service" a paper filter, take it out and gently tap it on the ground on edge (as in, with the filter media against the ground) this will dislodge dust without damaging the paper or pushing dust into the filter.

Wow, they are cool looking precleaners.
I just bought a cheapy ebay one.
But one of the Top spins could be on the future wish list.

Im trying to find where to get them, found one store in the US sell them for $115, i like them as Never need to be emptied and less restrictive than the bowl type, they have differn't sizes for different engine power ( CFM )

I also saw this which i may buy but i cant see where the dirt will come out, they say it doesnt need to be emptied, its a RAM and Cyclonic precleaner in one.

I had a Donaldson bowl type precleaner on my Moke in the 80's.
Even on a 6 week outback trip, it rarely needed emptying.
I haven't noticed any ill effects with this one, yet,
but will keep an eye on fuel economy, power etc.

Ahh so that hole points backwards, Makes sense, so will cross this off my to buy list, and keep looking for the TopSpin.

There is another brand TurboIII which is made from metal, not sure if i would want that sitting on my snorkel. Its quite expensive too. $350+

People do steal snorkle tops, and trees can smack them.

i'd be more concerned about getting spot lights/LED light bars knocked off before some funny looking pre-cleaner.

IMO you should put that $130 towards getting low range fixed. :wink:

Cause i felt like it :)

Low range is next on the list, Looking at the Low range Transfer Rebuild kit. Had a bit of a look at it on the weekend and there is oil leaking out the front Shaft, so guess the seal is gone and who knows what else.

Got no need for a top spin yet, might need it of do border track etc.

Deleted post i mentioned, Foam PreCleaners are only good for keeping bugs out of the Ram heads mesh ;)

I spoke to Donaldson today about a proper pre-filter. I had been using an oiled foam prefilter and the deficiencies of that approach were obvious when it is clogged up with dust.

I was worried that there might be a minimum airflow requirement for the Donaldson filter to work. The guy I spoke to suggested the clear View model for the Jimny and stated that there was no minimum airflow requiremeenmt but there was a maximum air flow. It will choke the engine if the rating is too low for the airflow of the engine. Interestingly he recommended the old clear view one and not the top spin. Price difference was something like $45 compared to $175 so the clear view was a winner on that basis anyway. Investigations are continuing.
