Just wondering if anyone had come across any other alternatives to a snorkel as I'm not that big a fan of the looks of them.

Found only one on the forum link below.

In the old days they used to plumb the intake through the firewall and into the back of the glovebox. Just remember to cover it with a mesh wire so you dont loose ya wallet

Your best alternative if you don't like the look of them, is not to have one, and don't drive through anything deeper than your sills.

You can also reposition the intake / try to shield it a bit from water or dust coming in the front, take a look at gwagen's hedgepig in the member's rigs section.

Some trucks use an in cab air intake, that you only switch on when needed, so normal use is under bonnet intake.
Of course that means you need to remember to switch it

I'll post in more detail tonight, but I don't recommend any driver operated inlet, from experience.

I've also run an in cab intake on a couple of cars, never for long.

I don't like snorkels ip the pillar either, especially on sierras.

Right - in front of my computer.

Many years ago I ran a Gen 3 hilux - the 2.8 diesel one. These were renowned for having a stupid air inlet arrangement (behind the headlight) so everyone that used one off road fitted a snorkel, which was fine except they were crazy noisy - there were some weird snorkel/motor harmonics that were just unbearable - so I made a little scoop that sat beside the radiator to funnel cold air into the air cleaner, with the intention of swapping to the snorkel whenever I locked the hubs.

Guess what - I forgot, once, and filled the motor with water.

Anyone that's run a thermo with a manual override knows that you'll overheat the motor, at least once.

I ran a manual switch on my electric water pumps and forgot to turn them on again after I'd turned them off more than once.

The lesson - there is no place in a 4WD for a critical driver-operated control that, if forgotten, could lead to engine damage. You WILL forget to switch it and you WILL damage the motor. Guaranteed.

I've set up in-cab intakes in a couple of sierras. My own, and Greg's old 660 car. The noise from both was unbearable. The were quickly abandoned.

I don't actually think there is anything inherently wrong with the stock inlet location on a Sierra. Have a look at the car next time you do deep water and you'll notice that area of the car stays very dry. My current inlet location is VERY high and in an area that I'm confident I'll never exceed in terms of water depth. (It's much higher than the top of my 1/2 doors)

Just some thoughts.

I've got the stock intake on my 1L sierra. I've had water over the bonnet probably a dozen times and I've never had a problem. I've even had it float with the engine running. I don't use a water blind or anything, just drive in.

The only problem I've had is the ignition getting wet, it's only stalled once though.

I'm not saying there's no need for a snorkel, I'm saying that the stock intake is a hell of a lot better than people think.

X2 on not having anything driver controlled. I made a cold air intake that runs down next to the radiator on the LJ (in an effort to stop the motor getting so hot on the beach), it's on the winter pipe from the airbox. I always forget to switch it over when I go through water, lucky I haven't gone through anything to deep with it.

Agree 100% with steve on the manual switch that is critical to engine function. Happens the other way too. I have a manual over ride for the thermo fan with the view of turning it off before doing deep water crossings. Never remembered to do it so far.

is that a 1l airbox is it steve, i have a sierra airbox on my g16b sierra but the 1lt box looks heaps better as to the location of the inlet, does it seal nice unlike the 1.4 airbox? you obviously find that it breaths fine?

years ago, a mate had a EH with triple 45DCOE webers, one of which lived in the glovebox.
Yes- it was gloriously noisy- and very interesting when it backfired.

it was fun- but not terribly practical

That's a hiace air box from an 80's "y" engined hiace.

Better designed than any Suzuki air box.

i guess you're idea of "living in the glove box" is different to mine... mate had triple 45's on an EH & only had to box in a tiny section of the firewall very similar to this. can't see why your mate's would have been mounted so far back to be in the glove box.

sure your not thinking of a mini with a DCOE weber?
Image

back when i was a lad, the local mini shop would chop out a section of the firewall & box it in for clearance using the battery tray/hole from another mini.

I considered chopping a hole in the firewall when I pulled the carby off my mini. :rambo:

sorry boss, so i take it the interstate transaction went well? :(

surely the swift is like a modern more comfortable reliable version of the mini.

cos the whole engine was sitting about (IIRC) 12" further back than the original donk.
there wasnt much original firewall left.

You opened the glovebox lid and there was a grubby weber sticking its fingers up at you.
Pretty dodgy job- but it worked well, exept for when it backfired or flooded, (um..why is there petrol leaking onto my boots?) 8O
then if the passenger was smart, they bailed out pretty quick.
It kinda reminded me of Fat Alberts car. (one of Bill Cosby's stories)

same with my ol' mate with the Alfa, apart from when his backfired tennis balls went everywhere.
