as the thread title says im wanting people opinions on what sensors on G16B that are "known to fail" basically i want to get a collection of spares for when i go on trips, so your input is very helpfull

also are all the ECU's on the G16B's the same or not??

Haven't had any fail yet. It's only been 8 years though.

On the G16B the EFI system is very very robust! The most fragile parts (bar the electric fuelpump) of the system IMO would be either the hotwire airflow meter or the hall effect cam angle sensor unless yours is the early model and has the more robust airflow meter and VR cam angle sensor. The most critical sensor on the entire system is the cam angle sensor, without signals from it you are completely buggered.

o2 sensors are the only real consumable one... FSM says to replace every 80,000kms or something like that & ECU's differ between different variations eg coil pack baleno's etc

my old 96 g16b has 340000km on it
the AFM failed mechanically (probably my fault from cleaning it)
the fuel pump didnt start one morning, kicking the tank fired it up but I replaced it anyway
The O2 sensor thread was trashed when I replaced the exhaust manifold, so had to fit a new one

thats it, like everyone said they are robust and there certainly hasnt been any common theme on failure threads on here

ok so basically o2 sensor, air flow meter and cam angle sensor, now my other question is from what i know when it comes to vitara's there were 2 different models early and later that came out with the G16B is there any way to tell which one i have as its always handy to know for getting spare parts

here is a pic of the engine if it helps

you have the early model. your more robust, five pin plug airflow meter is mounted to the airbox under that metal strap.

ok so you guys say the cam angle sensor is a weak link where do i find it on these engines?

It's inside the dizzy. You have the early VR type sensor which is basically a coil of wire on a magnetic core. Only way you will break that is from physical damage as it is the most robust sensor out there.

If you carry spares around with you, they will probably get damaged before the ones you are using fail. I wouldn't waste my money.

by the sounds of it i wont need spares, sounds like the g16b is a very tough engine
