Does your drain / fill plug look like this?? The very common issue of rounding the gearbox drain / fill plugs is now a thing of the past.

Well, cast them away into the damnation of eternal hell, and swap it for this fantastic unstripable head of the 15mm galvanised round plug (pt# 29115) available in the brass plumbing section at your local bunnings. No more dealing with 1/4" ratchet which is close enough but cause them to slip, no more swearing your fucking head off because you smashed your knuckles, no more reaching for EZ outs or bandaids !!

Be careful using these. It is much easier to over tighten them and crack the gearbox housing. I have seen this happen.

i'd still want a drain plug with magnets in them for collecting all the furry metallic gearbox fluff.

EDIT: the problem is people think 3/8" = 10mm. :wink:

I think I'm the one who showed Gwagen how to crack gearbox housings. I used a 17 or 19 mm hex head plug from Pirtek like the one below.

Atari, you can buy small magnets that can be glued into the plug.

The only one's I found like that cost about $20 and I have to wait for them to come from the UK. I got my girlfriend to call one one of the tool suppliers and ordered some, but somehow I just got 10mm hex socket. She called back and said WTF but they didn't know what they are :(

For about $2ea they do just fine. Smashing an old speaker magnet and araldite'ing it to the inside could be an option.

Shouldn't this say 3/8" ratchet? I've never managed to use a 1/4" ratchet to undo my 10mm gearbox drain plug :?

How hard were you swinging off the bolt to crack the gearbox?

It only has to be tight enough to not come undone!

Who ever invented imperial sizing should kick themselves in the nuts. I always get them mixed up....

I was using a 3/8 ratchet, maybe 200mm long so not much leverage, did it up tight, then gave a little bit more just to be sure and 'crack'.

All Suzuki 4wd gearbox (and Sierra Transfer case) threads are the same tapered thread, but various models had different "Heads" on the threads to remove them.

The LJ50 and 80 had a 14mm square drive male that was used with a 14mm spanner, Suzuki P/No 09246-16003

The early SJ410 had a 10mm Allen Key Hex, P/No 09246-16004

Late SJ410 had a 22mm Hex head with aluminium gasket (Ring spanner or socket), P/No 29446-80050

SJ50 and SJ70 had the 10mm Square drive that fill with mud and rounds off your 3/8" adapter, P/No 09246-16009, or 09246-16010 with magnet.

I got these a few weeks ago after removing the rear diff filler plug, I lost 5-6 hours and my will to live!!

These 10mm bits and a manual impact driver = thumbs up and a happy bumstein

ok so the size that I'm after is 15mm and I can go with whatever head suits me best. Cool. Is the drain plug the same size as the filler plug? I couldn't quiet crane my neck far enough to see if it was. I'll probably go for a hex head
