I asked a autolecky about bigger alternators,and he said that a 80amp alt. would take 2hp offf the engine
I tow a trailer, and can't afford to lose any power.
Is he right ?

sure will, alternator turns mechanical power to electrical, 80 amp is a fair wack
But, you aren't asking it to output 80 amp all the time, once you have charged the battery and are dawdling along you are using the same amount of power regardless of alternator size

I noticed that low range offroad now have alloy pulleys for crank, P/S and Alternator. That would help restore those lost ponies.

Not sure how he came to the 2hp figure but more spinning weight is what sucks the power. Downside to a falcon alternator upgrade. Not owning any winch or fancy light setups i'm going with a whoping 50 to 60a alternator upgrade for a G13a (already adding weight by changing the crankpulley)
Are the alloy pulleys 'underdrive' ratios. One of those things ricer do, lighter pulley and spin the waterpump/alternator less. Ok for a road car... not a good idea for a offroader.

I doubt you would see/find any measurable loss from the difference in "spinning weight" between say a falcon 110A and a stock 1.3 alternator both with a 20A electrical load placed on them for example..

Maybe not, but suzuki felt it was necessary to put thinner conrods in swift g13. Off the top of my head there is less weight differance between 4 sierra rods and 4 swift rods then a 40A alternator and a 110a. Single RPM measurements probably have vary little in measured . Engine response to throttle changes probably more noticeable measurement.

I got intereted in this cause I've been reading truck magazines, and some truckies paper.
There's adds for 12v aircon units for use when the motor's not running,but this guy didn,t think my car would handle it even with the engine running.
Today I seen an add for a aircooling unit{I gues an evaporative unit}, that use 1.7 amps ,I was wondering if they would cool the car . Doe anyone know anyone who has seen this thing in action?

1.7a!?!?!?!?!?! That would be ridiculous efficient if it could cool a hard top sierra  Never heard/seen them (sounds like an evolution of the underdash 12v heater/fans)

i dont know where some people get their logic from but its not at all logical.
the only time youll be losing engine power with a bigger alternator is, like royce said, just after startup or when ur winching or jump starting or... your fully sick sub is reaching full 6 inches of excursion and is drawing 5 gigawasps of electricary

IF your 80 amp alternator ever actually had enough load to put out 80a then 80a at 14v is say, 1.1kw, so about 1.5 hp. Maybe it has a slightly more hefty cooling fan. I reckon you'd struggle to measure the difference, much less feel the difference.

Not worth it, for $300 you are simply better off a 2nd hand kit and have it regassed. Cooling with iced water in the car seem to much of a hassle, you are either wasting money on ice at servos or being really disciplined (and still increasing your energy bill at home)

why not make a peltier cooler aircon? they can easily run on 12V and they are very efficient if properly set up. and their polarity can be reversed simply and then they are a heater  plus you can make them up to what ever power you need, see here http://www.instructables.com/id/Thermoe ... ner/#step1

That's the first time I've heard a peltier cooler described as efficient - just bear this in mind - if they were more efficient than your compressor driven units, you would be seeing a lot more of them around, especially for 12v fridge/freezers.

The good ones are around 5% efficient so you'd need vast amounts of energy to get any real effect. A few years ago I had a project where I needed to make a crude temperature controlled chamber for testing some electronics, I bought two cool boxes with the peltiers in the lid and then made one with chamber using two lids, I could get around 15C below ambient, in quite a small area with power consumption of around 96W, that was controlled by a PICDEM2 evaluation board. and worked reasonably well for the cost, however to attempt to chill the inside of a vehicle would take huge amounts of power. I also experimented with these to see if I could produce a generator from exhaust gasses to be able to eliminate the alternator, it was interesting but ultimately a total waste of time as the temperature differential across the Peltier has to be very carefully controlled and they can't be allowed to get too hot.
