Post subject:  handbrake types

did a quick search but didnt find anything specific, basically i am fitting WT diffs to my maruti, so i now have the option of using either the diff handbrake setup or the transfer one, which would give better braking? logic would suggest the wt method as you have 2 drums acting instead of one

i did a test tonite and the transfer brake is not very efficent, has anyone had experience with both?

cheers

I've always preferred handbrakes on the wheels. Transfer brakes are limited to activation whilst stationary only, the 'conventional' type can be used any time. Both can be made to be as effective as the other one, just depends on what you prefer

Curiosity question - why can transfer handbrakes not be activated whilst in motion?

Theoretically activating either style in motion will have the same impact, in one case with the effect multiplied by the differential gears, which would, again theoretically, compensate for the reduced friction area.

Have you ever seen a transfer case handbrake torn clean off? It gets pretty ugly!

A transfer handbrake really isn't great for using to slow the car down...if you had to you could apply it slowly but not to the extent of a wheel mounted one.

In saying that my disd transfer brake has waaaay more holding potential than a stock drum type unit. Again with if you are cross up with two wheels off the ground and open diffs you can say goodbye, but that rarely happens. Put a disc brake conversion kit on with a hardbrake caliper. Thats probably the best option.
