Hey guys,

Thought it would be cool to SAS my GV with GQ pootrol diffs and make everything underneath patrol spec so there wouldn't be any problems then eventually turn it into a comp truck. What are your thoughts? Havent really seen a lot of GVs with SAS so not really sure whats required/ideal and theres no aftermarket kits available :(

What do you guys think, or let me know better options.

Gideon

If you buy me gq diffs deal 8)

But why would i do that when id lose $$ for you to make some? ;)

And that would make your GV better than a GQ patrol how?

If you want to turn your GV into a patrol just buy a patrol. Much less work for the same result plus power and interior space.

Up front and ability to run 35s. Whats the best way to run 35s on a gv without an SAS? I would like something only for the front and keep the rear the same.

Hilux CV's, and heaps of guard chopping.

The only way SAS will help you fit 35's is if you chop the guards just as heavily, and fit a stupid amount of lift.

IM sorry but if your looking to build a "comp Truc" (fuck i hate that term) you have started with the wrong car. far too many panels!!!
as has been said on here hundreds of times, just because it can be done doesnt mean it should be.
As far as sas goes the diffs used mean very little, as long as you can get the gearing right and the offsets on the pumpkins are right.

your not going to find much of a kit for it cos every one realises its a bad idea.

but yes it could be done

Klutched, if you're "not really sure whats required/ideal" and you want to do it "so there wouldn't be any problems" I don't think you're really packing enough experience to consider an SAS swap. In all honesty, you're likely staring at a big unfinished project as the best case.

my guess is you've seen these:

They look cool, but don't think for a minute they are like a stock GV with a SAS - they're all going to be pretty nastily compromised one way or another. An SAS swap in going to be a big truckload of problems. You won't have problems from the patrol diffs, even rednecks in patrols find it hard to break them, the problems will be everywhere else. Here's a few.

Steering

Your car has rack and pinion steering behind the axle, as do all GV's. You're going to have to convert to a steering box in front of the axle. That's going to be a pretty significant job. Even more so when you consider you will have to package a panhard rod in there too.

Gearing.

The deepest patrol diff ratio is 4.88. You're going to be adding a LOT of weight to your car, running taller tyres, but you can't gear to suit them. That's going to put your H27 into pain, blow out the fuel economy totally ( like really, really badly) and it's going to drive terribly. Off road you're going to be worse off than with stock tyres because your gearing will suck and you won't be able to crawl or spin the tyres. Double suck.

There's no fix for that on road - it's just going to drive bad, but offroad you could gear the transfer, or swap to a hilux transfer with gears with some amount of jiggerypokery with gearboxes/bellhousings/adapters. That's going to cost BIG.... and it's still going to drive bad on road.

Ride height

How tall do you think you'll have to go to get a 35 in the front or rear guards? how hard are you willing to cut into the rear door? how far do you want to move the rear axle back to stay out of the door? (that means new chassis crossmembers in the rear and a new fuel tank) Have a look at all those cars - they are super tall. THe XL-7 is on leaves up the front, and the others look like (or were) a lot of work. the Greek one looks to be only running 32's or something.

Suspension

The rear isn't going to cope with the height you're going to need to run the front, so you're going to have to rebuild the whole rear suspension to suit. There's a whole range of ways that can go wrong. The front might be best radius arm to avoid huge packaging/geometry headaches, but then that raises the whole roll stiffness problem front to rear, something that plagues patrols and cruisers with lots of lift (and a GV is going to be comparable to a patrol or cruiser with lots of lift - at risk of being super wobbly)

And after all of that what have you got? A biggish car on 35's with big diffs. That's not even very capable. Patrols on 35's are roughly equivalent for capability to a well driven Sierra on 31's. What's worse is it owes you a heap of money and is terrible to drive on road because of the hokey gearing.

Vitaras are a better candidate for a SAS but even so, it's deminishing returns. There's plenty of parts and knowledge to beef the IFS, but there's lots of poor SAS swaps out there.

Have a really, really good read of this thread:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/suzuki/8 ... racks.html

Quite a lot of work, methinks.

Steve.

Post subject:  Re: GV SAS?

It could be done but it would never be allowed on the road so there goes half the comps
U would need to cut the front of the chassis off and remake it like the yanks do as they dont have a steering box
To fit 35 and be low enough to drive it on the road u would say good buy to ur back doors and most of ur front guards
35 are big real big and as far as comps go they r small on the tire scale
Hilux cv and full floater rear would handle it but u will need a sierra tc to gear it on road
Keep the gv and buy a 2l 2door vit
Bob the back off and ditch the guards
Extend 3 link on rear so a 4 door shaft fits
Then chop and drop the front frame and run lux cv
The yanks run these with up to 39in tires and are realy cheap but very capable rigs
Look for some of mike hagens builds

Agree with all of the above.
With the addition of, theres better diffs to use than patrol.

60 or 80 would be better IMO.

just get a swb 2 door patrool gq, and presto... u can fit 35 with an aftermarket lift, plus ur weight would still be lower than a full size patrool

Yeah. 60 would be my pick for a budget build.

Amd that's even before we get into a discussion of "comps"

To comp a car you really want the cheapest, easiest package thats competitive, and that depends very much on the comp.

There's no point building a completely custom GV that you have put your life savings into, wrecking it "comping" it, and still getting spanked by guys with shitter GQ's who can drive harder than you because they can buy another one for $3K.

Also I have ha a patrol... Don't think there bullet proof there not.... A lot more expensive to fix... And fit in every Tom dick and Harry's ruts.... If I was you and I don't think it could be done but nothing's impossible why not put a gv body on a sierra....

Thanks for the input 8) GVs look savage SASd

Fatzook are lux cvs available for GVs yet?

Ive seen a build the guy cut off all the mounts and pushed the rear back and front forward to clear 35s.

I'd be happy to run 33s on the ifs. But gearing is the problem cause 5.12s dont cut it on the auto.

Gv onto a sierra would be pretty cool.

5.12 and auto is probably as good as it gets in your position

33 tyres are quite easily fitted to a GV with a 40mm lift, 40mm coil spacers, a 50mm Bodylift and some extreme guard trimming.

I can easily fit 31's under mine with out a body lift and my guard trimming has been very conservative. I still retain all the plastic trims and inner guard trims.

CV's are an issue but i'd rather a $100 CV bust than something more expen$ive further down the drivetrain. Front diff = $250+. Transfer = $450+.

Well, i get rubbing with skinny 32s on the rear of the front arch with 2" body lift and 2" coil spacers. Once I get my 3" jimnybits coils it should be a bit better. I think calmini front arms would help. Rear is ok, but i think extended trailing arms would help.

Why not use a different car. OR cut the body out of the GV and use the panel skins on a buggy.

Post subject:  Re: GV SAS?

id do as dan is saying mate hard driving and ifs gets expensive, 33's will be asking for a defect, and sas will be very hard to be legal so then you will need a tow car and trailer

^^^ what he said

+ why not learn to get the most out of the IFS... will make you a better driver if you do end up upgrading/downgrading to a pootrol IMO

in saying this i do plan to do a few comps in mine but ive already spent the money on most parts needed. full float rear and ill be happy aslong as im not too throttle happy

Do the calmini arms push the wheel forward

What, like 5mm? If that is infact the case, caster correction would be the limit of its benifits.

Something like the altered ego kit (1.5" forward) would help clear 33's without any fire wall mods. This would also allow more neg offset on the rims, and give clearance for the subsequent increase in scrub radius.
