Post subject:  GV transfer case stuck!!
Ughhh, went wheeling today at glasshouse and now my transfer is stuck in 2/4wd not sure. It will not budge :( i think its time for a replacement but not sure if it'll be fixable :( :(

You will have to get the shifter out and re-align the shift pins as they will be out of position.

Quite a common problem for sierra's. Happends to GV's and Vits sometimes.

Yeh........ Mine wasnt grinding...... As in the video it was like a bom going off under the car when the transfer got loaded up.

The issue was the input bearing in the t/case was worn and was allowing the gears to push apart under load and skip teeth.

Was easier and cheaper to just replace t/case.

I'm trying to upload a video now of me wheeling yesterday with the noise :/

EDIT: anyone know if a manual transfer will fit on the auto? Hopefully I won't need to replace the transfer though....

No they wont.
The input shafts are different lengths.

You need to get a t/case from a manual GV. Doesnt matter the year but it has to be off the same box.

XL7 manual ones are no good either. try to get the lowest KM one you can from 02 on wards

whatttt?? You said they won't fit but get a manual one? I have an auto so I need an auto transfer case?

Also why 02+? Are they stronger?

OOps My bad.


You will need an Auto one for your AUTO.


I say get a 02+ as there was a recall on early 99-01 GV's to do with something in the transfer. Most should have been fixed but better to get a later one just to be on the safe side.

There was a redesign on one of the gears to fix a problem with the transfer case jumping from 4H back to 2H - I don't remember there being a recall though

Yeah atari, i think the noise is the front diff. Not sure what it could be though. It sounded like it was coming from the RHS

Stick isnt hitting floor at all
Sounds like the sliding gear is sliding up to the the other gear and grinding the corners away
Might need to open her up and check dont sound to good

did you use the same guy to put the locker in who built your last diff?

what inner CV did you use on the RHS in the end?

and you wonder why the previous one failed. :roll:

my bet is the RHS CV circlip isn't engaging in the locker & it has pull out due to the hectik lift you run & the splines are munched on the CV & probably the locker.

does the transfer lever move as per normal?

have you started investigating it, by pulling shit apart or you're hoping we can diagnose it via a keyboard & screen?

Sounds to me like the engaging gear (round thingy that sits on the fork) might be around the wrong way. The are one way only when being installed.

That'd be my guess as well, seems to happen when your front RHS is at droop (hence CV would be extended the most). Would be easy enough to check - is it still pushed in nice and firm to the diff or has it backed out an inch or so?

I couldn't go 100m offroad when I was using the GV inner without it working its way out... wouldn't take load to cause carnage if the splines were only just engaging.

GV one doesn't lock in, but it shouldn't be a problem, it doesn't fall out or even come close to it on full droop. Plus Bruce ran GV d/s and p/s axle for 3 yrs and so does b4t i believe.

Front diff is apart nothing wrong in there, splines are all in tact on both locker and CV/axle. Water must have gotten into the housing because the oil was all creammyyyy. My guess was through the breather.

So now my diff is all good, i'm going to check my transfer while the diff is out to see if it was the diff causing problems.

Fixed it, just had to realign that pin and it's all good now :D
