Installing vitara 4.6 ring and pinion to a sierra carrier and came across an issue. I know I've read about it here before but never payed any attention to what was the fix and I can't find it because a) I suck at searching. And B) not really sure what to search for to find it. Anyway my problem is this: ![]() The vit ring gear doesn't retain the cross pins like the sierra one does. The vitara cross pin is retained by a roll pin. I can see a fix by drilling and tapping for grub screws underneath the flange. But I'm not reinventing the wheel with this so after opinions from those that have been here before. |

there is a retaining "can" that you can get from LROR & i think others have peened the edges of the carrier http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... -cans.html |

A tack weld will hold it in place...... |

Too impatient to wait for parts from low range and not happy with the idea of welding it I went ahead with my original plan of drilling and tapping some recessed M5 threads to lock the pins with grub screws. ![]() ![]()

Nice work..... but..... those pins are supposed to be able to rotate for better lubrication. I have a retaining can here you can have if you still have your diff out. |

Thanks for the offer jas, but I'm happy to give this setup a go. I don't see the shaft not turning causing any lubrication issues as the grooves in the shaft will let the oil into the bore of the gears. The vitara centre has the same grooves on the cross pin shaft and is located with a roll pin. |

Go to a bearing joint. Get a couple of thick o-rings that are a tight fit. Roll them on between the carrier and ring gear. Done. About $1.50 worth of effort. |

My effort was less. I done it at work while being paid! |

if they needed to rotate why do arb put pins through them in their air lockers? |
