Heya Im looking at buying another zook and don't know what one to go for because of the differences plan is to get 6.5's, cromo axles and run 31's or 33's with a locker or 2 ive heard that for coilys parts are harder to get for them as they were only made for a couple o years but what are the jimnys like for mods and capability off road |

if those are your planned mods, then a leafy is really the only way to go. |

It's pointless doing those mods on a coil car- front end strength and suspension design will be a constant frustration. You can't even get cr-mo for a coil sierra, front or rear. Those mods on a jimny would be cool if it could be kept under 26" of suspension lift, but apparently that's not possible. Much more costly though, and the required guard work is a pain from what I have seen. Front end strength is still a issue, but there are fixes, although they are costly/a hassle. Steve. |

You and your helpful answers Steve, you were meant to continue the quote tree OP, have a read through some of the jimny build threads to get an idea of what needs doing to fit largish tyres to a jimny. Also think about body damage, a soft top sierra is much easier to repair if you take out an "A" pillar on an embankment compared to a hardtop vehicle. You would probably want to exo a jimny. |

If you have no real budget issuses get a Jimny. Comes with PS/AC/injection, has a longer wheelbase then a SWB Sierra. And won't come with heaps of 'keep it running work' The guards are easily trimmed with either tinsnips/jigsaw/grinder. An SJ case bolts in and Airlockers fit both front and back diffs. Chromoly axles etc is where you run into some problems. No one mass produces anything, so for me it's been custom all the way and experimenting with types of axles and CVs. My build threa is here somewhere and has all the info. |

I completely agree with you there 31zook, except that there looks to be a "hard limit" where further (inner) guard trimming will become very difficult, and far harder than a Sierra. Mitch was up against this with his jimny- cutting further the he did looked almost impossible. As the op is asking about maybe 33's I think that's relevant- I haven't seen a jimny on tyres over 32 that looked like a sensible height, except for massively cut up Scandinavian cars. Steve. |

Yep yep. I think the limit for a Jimny is about 31s without heaps of height or pretty well making new inner guards front and rear. Although it only normally takes one guy working it out and the rest follow. |

soft top sierra it is then I had a 93 wt but wasn't sure about the differences between coilys and jimnys due to the coil suspension and aftermarket parts And as matthew said above a soft top is easier to repair if there happens to be a bit of a hit with a bank or the rocks |

It was a joke 303. (sort of) The OP wants 31's or 33's. It is possible to run a Jimny low on 31's, and I've seen one low on narrow 32's, but on 33's they are all overly high (as in falloverly high) and I'd say the advantage of the big tyres is almost totally offset by the ride height increase. I spent quite a while with Mitch going through what looked to be possible in terms of guard work on his car, and it got super complex trying to go into the firewall, or further up than the stock inner guard. I'd love to try it one day when Jimnys are as cheap as carby vitaras are now, but for now it's all a bit too much of a hassle. Steve. |

You don't have to wreck your car to wheel it hard. |

That's not what I said. If you are into hard wheeling, the opportunity for damage/roll over is high. |

What kind of punishment can a fibreglass canopy take I know it wouldnt take a roll like sierradans did but just how much can they take |

Meh. They split pretty easy. They can be repaired, but generally the guys in the club here with 'glass tops take them off for the hard trips. Steve. |

Zuzukie wrote: What kind of punishment can a fibreglass canopy take I know it wouldnt take a roll like sierradans did but just how much can they take They take a fair bit of punishment, mine only started splitting after being dragged over the rocks a few times, I had more dramas with the side and rear windows popping out as the fibreglass flexed with the body and the glass didnt. |
