Post subject:  Rust proofing a sierra wt chassis

Hi everyone I am in the process of restoring a zook and I am come across rust proofing the chassis

Has anyone ever tried to galvanize a chassis or is the normal spray paint job the only way about it and what about powder coating the chassis
Anyway would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this matter

When my body comes off we will do a mix of underbody tar , lanolin and black paint and put it through the splatter gun. Really effective for rust proofing but also great for soundproofing if you hit the underneath of your cab while your going. We just add lanolin to the tar til it gets to a slightly runnier consistency than honey, then mix a bit of black paint in to help it not dry so sticky and your away.

the septone underbody rustproof is good stuff, its a bitumen based spray and has a nice finish. comes in a rattle can or larger tins. can be sprayed using a large nossle spray gun.

I'd steer clear of anything that doesn't set hard. (As in anything with a tar/bitumen element). Oil leaks/fuel spills etc will turn it into a sticky mess. Exhaust heat will soften it. Dust and mud gets trapped in it.

The bituminous stuff is intended for inside cavities etc that don't see spray/fluids etc IMHO.

I think galvanising has been ruled out before, however it's common on land rover chassis.

I used a thick paint like rust guard.

Sanded most of the chassis first applied a good layer of heavy duty rust kill primer then a some rust guard gloss black paint

Probably better ways of doing it but best I could do on my budget and with my equipment
