Hi guys. I have a 1995 SV620. I recently started putting Premium 98 fuel in, as of 2 weeks ago, and recently the vitara has been struggling quite badly when on a cold start, in fact this morning it actually stalled, it seems to be getting worse. I don't know if it is fuel related, although fuel is the ONLY thing I have changed on the car for ages, and this 'struggling' problem seemed to happen pretty soon after. Also, a mate told me today that sometimes 98 fuel can clear out junk in the filters and the it gets in the fuel line? Not too sure, but he just said to change the fuel filter. What do you guys think? |

Also I should mention, I have been getting GOOD economy on 98, so at least it's doing something right |

mine starts & runs like a bag of dicks with BP premium in it, it will chug & carry on on start up almost like it's flooded or hasn't got enough fuel for a few seconds & that's even after letting the pump prime, with caltex premium in it... it flat out will not do it. |

Oh really. So you reckon try different fuel? Okay. I think this time round I actually put Caltex Premium in it. But different locations so it might be different up here. Although, 95 never did it? Not even close to doing it |

I've had the same thing happening when I started filling it up with shell 98 and Caltex vortex 98, when cold it seemed like it was missing a few pods but cleared after a few minutes. I kept on using shell and vortex and after a few days it came good. from what I got told ones, is that the ECU is learning to adapt to driving conditions and also when using different fuels as well. it really only lasted a few days from memory and has been good ever since. it makes a noticeable difference when using 98 over 91 or even 95 oct. more power and better fuel economy.even had 100 octane in it a few times and that really gets it going when it hits the 3000 rpm |

I will leave it for a few days and maybe it will go away, and I will try different brand premium fuel. I didn't notice power increase with premium, I just noticed better economy about 30 - 40+ ks SO FAR |

dhglory, is yours a 4 or a v6? your profile says you have a SE416, but in other posts you mention that it's a 6 cylinder? sure you're not my old mate outbackjack, your username on here is very similar to a troll FB account that a few groups had problems with & it turned out to be outbackjack being a nob gobbler. |

From certain liberty stations depending where I'm going and what I'm doing. Towing a trailer interstate with 4 bikes with spares and tags in the backseat I need all the power I can get To be honest I have never seen 100 octane before hahah |

Not all petrol stations have it. Just a handfull of libery stations that that I'm aware of blend 98 with ethanol to get the 100 oct. It sure gives you that extra kick |

I know the one at Kallangur kept selling it for maybe 2 or so years. I ran a couple of tanks of it in a Sierra but stopped when I realised it was ethanol blended. |

I don't believe you. Your car doesn't know what fuel is in it, so it doesn't know how to advance the timing to maximize the slower burn of the higher octane fuel, so unless you already have massively advanced timing that's making the car ping like a bitch when it has normal fuel in it, your going to get exactly zero added power from ethanol fuel. You will get reduced fuel economy though. Steve. |

steve, you sound like you've done some googling, I FEEL my car is performing better on 98 and even better on 100 oct. you can show me all the maths but it doesn't change the fact I actually do notice the difference with better fuel usage,go figure. |

pretty sure "The Steve" doesn't google... just like no one knows what "The Stig" looks like. depending on what free vitara we're talking about but i'm pretty sure non of them will have a knock sensor for starters |

I never had 91 in it so wouldn't know what that is like. 95 as a minimum if I can't get anything else. I only go by what a mechanic has told me and that is the ECU adapts to driving conditions/style and fuel your running. I know nothing but the old chap sounded pretty convincing. |

| Post subject: | Re: Vitara Struggles on Cold Start? |
That's great for you DH, but even if your car was properly timed for 100 octane, it's unlikely you'd feel the difference. If it was 100% oil derived 100 octane, and the car was timed for it, You'd notice the improved economy, but as it has ethanol to make the octane up, the fuel is thermally less efficient. You don't know anything about me. I have run she'll v-power 98 and 100 in the same car on the same drive cycle [i] in a car that was both boosted and knock sensed and therefore sensitive to octane[\i] and it made no perceptible difference to performance but hurt economy due to the added ethanol. You can "feel" all you like, but when used in a car that can optimize timing, it does not yield a detectable performance increase. So, No, I still don't believe you. And I wouldn't believe your "convincing" mechanic, because he's wrong. Steve. |

my old man gave me his vitara when he upgraded to a new TD vitara. 280.000 clicks on it but still runs like a swiss watch. we have been using Suzuki's on the property for as long as I can remember. not exactly free as I've done my fair share of work in the business but that's beside the point, you can't argue with me on what it should or shouldn't be doing when I am the one behind the wheel noticing these differences. |
