Post subject:  XL-7 Owners.. What Oil Filter are you using ???
I just dropped the oil out of my 2002 XL-7 and was totally suprised that the Original filter that according to EVERY Spare parts shop is supposed to be Ryco Z801..
The one fitted to the Engine was a Ryco Z172..


So what one are you using on your XL-7....

Forget the Ryco go get a genuine one...... Same price or maybe even cheaper and a better quality filter .

My Ryco book doesn't list a filter number for the 2.7 but lists a Z172 for the 2.5. I'd assume that Z172 is fine for the 2.7 too

They don't keep parts down here for vehicles over 10 years old.. So Its either REPCO or Supercheap..

$18.95 for the Filter..
The Oil is the expensive bit.. Running 10W/40 Penrite and got it on special for $28.95 but since its a 5.5 litre sump had to get an additional litre at $11 to do the job..

So $58.90 to get it done..

Ryco website says Z172 for H27 amd 801 for G16b (same face dimensions anyway)

Suzuki have like 4 different oil filters, you'd get a genuine one from any dealer.

Where you from?

Factory filter from Suzuki is around $15. add on a few $$ for postage and its about the same. Just try to find somewhere that will send you genuine filters.

Plus the last vehicle that had the H2.7 was the early 2005 GV. I assume its the same filter. That's less than 10 years.

Don't use Rycos - I gave up on them a few years back. They actually had two differing designs under the same part number and it was pot luck what you got (I think they were even made in different countries?) Anyway, one design seemed to increase the engine rattling on start up and the other design was even worse! I bought some K&N's and have been using them - they're better but still not what I'd call perfect. http://www.suzuki-forums.com/1g-1999-20 ... -auto.html

I've been reading a lot of posts recently suggesting the OEM Suzuki filter is a lot better than aftermarket for rattling at start up eg http://www.suzuki-forums.com/1g-1999-20 ... post311190 (Built4Thrashing I think you posted something similar on Outerlimits too?) - so I'm going to bite the bullet next oil change and try one. God knows I've tried all sorts of oils over the years, so why not an OEM filter. I've even been running 0W40 Mobil 1 to try and get the oil flowing quicker!

That's interesting as the recommended Ryco filter used to be the Z172 when I was using them. Z172 still exists on their website http://www.rycofilters.com.au/catalogue/part/part/Z172 :? Perhaps the Z801 flows more oil.... for less rattling at start up?

I bought a couple of genuine Suzuki "Made in Japan" oil filters for $13 each at the dealer. That's cheaper than "known brand" aftermarket filters from retail outlets!

I won't be fitting it for a while but will be interested to see if there are any differences at engine start up.

Ive gone off Ryco esp after the number change, said "that aint right" when repco quoted it thought was for a 1.6 and it looked to have alot less holes, also i had a few that the gasket fulls out of its grove when screwing it on even when lube so when start oil gets squirted everywhere, just ended up getting a repco one which is ok. But gen has been better.

I have just ordered 4 Denso filters for $18 from a US shop with radiator hoses, tie rods etc etc overall costing half the price of what i can get here and good brands like Denso, Moog etc. Being DENSO there more likely to be identical or even Suzuki OEM anyways since nearly everything on a suzuki XL-7 motor is DENSO or ACDELCO.

UUUMMM,,, sounds like a normal oil filter description!


$12.95 for genuine at Suzuki in the city Adelaide. and they are a stock item......Why dick around with anything else for the price!

:roll: I was only listing the part number and description, In most cases Denso is OEM for Suzuki, eg air filters, spark plugs, cabin filter blah blah blah. Even the diagnostic tool is a denso for the XL-7.

And with the clutch im not at primary school anymore i did my research and only u say its a racing clutch when i said it was mainly street. and for the sake of it im putting it in.

I havent seen them here, i saw them and got them from rock auto for $4.53 each. I mainly ordered them as needed a stack of other parts, mainly on the cooling side radiator hoses etc, just the hoses alone was $75 while they did Gates hoses for around $8. Water pump gen Denso was $45 with gaskets here there around $130

I would go to suzuki and get filters but thought for that price might as well buy a few and delivery fees didnt change. If once of buy local, in this case i bout bulk as the XL-7 needs some attention.

USE A GENUINE FILTER - forget the dribble ryco and wesfil advertise. The genuine filters flow better than the aftermarket filters on H series motors

I worked a suzistore for quite a while and the vehicles that had aftermarket oil filters fitted to the H25/27 engines were doing timing chains and guides at and before 100K kms on average. They Rattled their guts off. 9 Hours labour plus chains and guides and the timing chain kits were a grand on their own.

The hydraulic tensioners slack off.

Cars that had genuine filters fitted since new sounded MUCH different with more K's than cars without them. If you cant find a filter where you live get one delivered, they arent very expensive and fairly sure the rycos are dearer than genuine ones anyway.

Hey bang, mines done over 200 though, and I use cheap nippon max filters. Have no rattle on start up and my chains and tensioners haven't needed replacing. The key is changing your oil every 5000.

I got timing chain ticking every startup on a ryco, and only when very cold with the repco's. True none at all with the Suzuki.

Ryco was by far the worse some startups i turned of the motor as the chain was ticking bad and sounded as if it was stretching eg like ticking but the chain slowly tensioning out. If turned of and restarted the ticking was gone. Nothing but trouble with them.

I saw bosh filters but avoided them. I would go suzuki but it would be nice to know the differences between a Denso and a Gen suzuki one if there is any at all? I dont have my manual with me but i recall it usually recomended either suzuki part number or a Denso part number. with Spark plugs it was either Denso or NGK but recomended the Denso Platinum.

I just got a Genuine Suzuki filter waiting to put it in after I fix my oil leak. The current one I have in now ticks like crazy at start up. K&N filter didn't tick. Mines probably due for a timing kit at 256k! Will probably do it when I pull the engine out to fix my leaks.

5000ks is indeed a lot shorter time than by the book, have you owned the car since new for 200 clicks? Another part of the mystery is as you say service intervals. Regular conditions in these are 10k intervals yes? I know we used to do them at 8500 because of Australian conditions being considered extreme compared to Japan. So long intervals coupled with an average filter wont help either.

if shes rattly pull off the rocker covers and have a look if its sludgy in there, if so run a some diesel in the oil and run it for 5-10 minutes.. Then flush and refill. Just check you're using the right grade oil. These things have small oil holes in tensioner and clogged up they cause slack on the chain also.

I just checked my OEM filter and it's made by http://www.roki.co.jp/english/products/converter.html - Tokyo Roki Co Ltd - it's branded on the filter along with Suzuki Genuine 165-85FAO. The part number of LFS810 appears next to Tokyo Roki- which appears to be their own part number?

I've been using them for probably my last 10 oil changes, I do mine every 5000km. $8 for nippon max.
