As most GV owners know the Air operated front diff in the GV is shit and the fix is to use a Vit centre in the Steel GV housing.

Now that is simple enough but once installed there is a slight problem. The drivers side side gear is slightly different to the air operated GV one and the simple fix is to use the drivers side drive shaft from a SV420/SV620.

Simple huh...... well for anyone that's done this great but how difficult is it to find that shaft........



Well i've got a solution...... and it involves power tools....... a die grinder to be exact.

the GV shaft doesn't lock in because its spline is too short so why not just change where the axle locks in.....

To do this I just pushed the stub axle in to a set point and pulled out the die grinder and ground a new slot for the Circlip.

simple and easy solution if you have diff out and apart.

Looks good, should be no problems with that at all. If you wanted to get the edge perfect for the circlip you could do it in a lathe but it will work just like you've done it.

Still an issue for air lockers, I'd be less inclined to grind away the spline on a locker.

you could just build the proper bomb proof diff set up & have the circlip groove cut in the right spot in the stub axle. ;wink:

The bomb proof diff requires finding that SV drivers axle and making a stubby axle for the drivers side......Problem is that doesn't work in the Gv without doing major re engineering of the drivers side diff bracket.

This is just another alternative

the bomb proof diff uses a LHS axle, cut down & resplined, pretty sure you'd be able to sacrifice a GV LHS axle to do it, just needs to be a 26 spline one as the 22's are obviously to skinny. :wink:

That wont fit unless you cut and remake the drivers side diff bracket.

Drivers side needs a slide in CV shaft unless you plan on doing the above.

Yea diff bracket its a bitch to get around! Cutting room for it doesn't work theres not enough meat left to hold it together. Need a super thick plate style as the room for triangulating is minimal

It's not hard to make them
I made mine for my vit
There way overkill like 10mm plate with 6mm flat bar welded up the length on its edge.
Bolt the mount up
Let it hang on a jack
Get some 3mm mdf to use as template
Use counter sunk bolts on the stubby and the mound and u will have heaps more room

But if you make a stronger (bomb proof) slide in CV you wont need to do the extra work to the diff bracket.

Your already doing the work to the cv to make it stronger so why bother with making the drivers side bolt in when a slid in replacement will fix the issue without having all the extra work of moding the diff bracket.

Coz running 1 spare is easier and (excluding modding the diff circlip location) 26sp vit cvs are hard to come by so any that break should be turned into stubbys. I also like the ease of changing bolt in cvs over slide in also avoids oil and seals. But at the end of the day we are trying to make stronger cvs so changing them should be alot less frequent. There is more than 1 way to skin a cat. All depends what way you want to go down and what parts you can get.

This is what I've been getting at. If your making stronger CV's for the GV then you shouldn't need to change them so that makes the need to carry spares not required.
