Hi,
I was on my way to drop my best mate home and while driving down the street he lives on a very faint whoosing noise (or as he describes it, a slight scraping noise or a brushing noise) started and was not a constant sound, it was about 1 every half a second and slowly got louder. I started braking and as the car got slower it stopped. I couldnt see anything unusual when I stopped. I put it in 4wd and drove the rest if the way (about 80 meters). When I arrived at his place I tried to disengage 4wd but it just flashed on the dash and then went solid again (2005 model electronic system). I drove out of his place still in 4wd then pulled over again. Selected 2wd and it disengaged this time. Drove home without a noise. Anyone know what the problem may be or has anyone experienced this before?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks
Nick

As it happens I had that whooshing noise on the weekend when I left one of my manual hubs engaged accidentally in 2WD. It sounds like one of your hubs did not disengage which might also explain the flashing light. Noise goes away at low speed.

incorect disengagement can also be related to the failure of VSV solanoid 1
cheaper to get mnual ubs unless you have warranty

Hahahaha no it definitely was not a pedestrian or a cat. I was thinking myself that it may have been the hubs not disengaging. However the noise just happened all of a sudden about 4-5 kilometers away from when I last had it in 4wd. Is there a way to fix this without changing to manual hubs or draining my wallet? Also what is involved in converting to manual hubs considering that I have the electronic system. Do I need to do anything to the transfer case? Or is it as simple as just changing the hubs?

if you get the avm ones its bolt on, if you get old sierra ones, you need an adapter ring.
then you just flip the hoses so one vsv goes into the other, and the hard lines in the back of the engine bay go into each other.

or you can swap to vitara locking nuts & not have to worry about spacers & use sierra hubs.
