| Post subject: | Turbo jimny-Worth considering a conversion |
hi, I own DMW Motorsport (mainly do swift turbo conversions and gearbox builds), Ive recently bought a few jimnys and am keeping a 09 m13 auto one for my daughter to go play in, mainly as a road car but for a bit of beach/offroad aswell.Ive been doing turbo conversions on the swifts for years now and had a look at the engine bay on the jimny and thought it would be an ideal candidate for a small turbo set up,say running 6 psi ,std internals, small front or top mount intercooler. So being new to jimnys is the auto gearbox strong enough to handle say a 30hp increase in power and a fair bit more tourqe?I guess a bigger trans cooler will help. Ive been using AEM piggyback on the M series swifts when converted to turbo and would use the same on the jimny, this then leaves everything running off the factory ecu until you hit boost then the piggyback takes over. There have been plenty of guys swapping in a g13b twin cam and turboeing them ,what about guys turboeing the m series ,is there any floating around on these forums?Im just trying to gauge whether its going to be worthwhile doing a few turbo kits whilst doing the one for my daughter. |

kyzermattingley dropped in a M18 and turboed it. think the car got sold or parted out and he tood down all the pics but. may still be worth a look at his thread viewtopic.php?t=11319 a big trans cooler is a must. if this is your day job, you may want to consider developing a bolt on kit that can be sold at a low price point. the only option is a bullet supercharger and that comes without a ECU for 5K 6K if you want a inter-cooler a conservative map on a piggyback that's basically plug and play, a bolt on turbo kit that wont mean i need to drive 1000K one way to a dyno and ill put down a deposit if i get my new job! edit: Engrish |

30 HP sounds like a heap of extra power for the stock engine :s An M16A vvt conversion would boost power from round 83 HP - approx 100 Hp which isn't even that much of a jump An M18A would have roughly the same power output at 123 hp.... a transmission cooler would be an idea? This being said.... I would like a small turbo for mine |

i reckon a turbo kit is a lot less weight then an entire engine, and therefore will be viable for me to airfreight in. a engine would cost me 800 in freight alone. |

The Jimny auto is at the limit of its torque handling capacity behind an M13. They are rated for something like 110Nm. Running a very, very large cooler and temp gauge might hold it together, but it's a very expensive problem if you break it - the Jimny autos don't have any aftermarket parts sources, so everything is Suzuki genuine only. Steve, Is the jimny auto at its torque limit due to component strength or due to how hot the fluid gets really quickly or a mixture of both? If a big cooler and a fluid reservoir was added would this solve some of the low torque capabilities of the auto? Another thought is to adjust the boost curve to mean power and torque is made high in the rev range might help to take the off the line load off the trans? By having a good boost controller that can smoothly increase over the rev range so that the power and torque curves are nice and smooth building up to the top end could help the trans live longer. |

I think that it would be easier, more reliable and cheaper to just drop in a bigger engine. |

Well Ive seen how fragile the rods are in M18 engines once turboed and building a tough m18 would be cost/time prohibitive for this project.I will have a word with my Auto trans guy and see if the jimny auto can be beefed up in any way.Im not doing it to make heaps of power just to make it a bit more responsive and give it more tourqe ,and a bit nicer to tow a camping trailer behind!!. On the old swift autos they could replace the bands with some out of another make of car which were up to the job so thats a possibility. There is also much better auto fluid around than the stock dexron 3 made for extreme conditions(race) , coupled with a big cooler and electric fan that may be enough to keep the auto box in good health. |

Gregc investigated beefing the jimny auto. It's a unique auto for the RWD Kei applications (so maybe carry van and jimny) and adapted to the g/m13. Because power is restricted in Kei applications the auto was built just big enough to cope with the maximum torque a 660 can feasibly produce. There are no upgraded components everything comes from Suzuki. A line pressure upgrade is as much as could be achieved as far as the trans builder Greg approached was concerned. (Rodney at wholesale automatics) Towing will not be fun at all with a boosted motor and the auto. Temps will go sky high. Greg's jimny auto (stock motor and gearing) ran hotter on the highway, even with a huge cooler than it generally ever does offroad. Steve. |

o.k. thanks for the useful info. Apart from the auto being a weak point is there anything else that is not up to the job of adding approx 30hp to a m13 jimny. |

If the auto is the big hold up, what about adapting a chunkier automatic to the M13? There are plenty of adaptor plates floating around for adaptoring all sorts of other engines to all sorts of gearboxes. (Dellow conversions have adaptor plates for plenty of things) Yes you might have to look outside the rehlm of suzuki, but there must be some suitable rwd automatic gearboxes out there looking at? Worth the effort? That's another question. |

the transfer case chains do stretch. they cost roughly 700 bucks a pop. it will obviously stretch faster when you boot it. causes chattering noises on full load well before it breaks or anything. |

wonder if the aw4 can be adapted to the m series, i'm certain they didn't sell an auto in the m16 powered swb NGV? strength on road or offroad? offroad, axles & cv's would be my focus. maybe a gear driven sierra case if the chain becomes problematic in the jimny case, but that means bigger tyres, lift etc etc. |

aw4 from pajero? http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic, ... 9a6a94eaa6 oh, for interest sake Can someone metrically define sizes for a big and/or huge auto trans cooler for jimny/trimatic/aw4. |
