Hi Guys I am looking at building a new ute tray for my Suzuki sierra NT LWB ute and just want to know roughly the weight of some one else tray as I have calculated the weight of mine WITH THE MATERIALS which I propos to use and it will weigh around 130kg, is that a good weight??? if not I might have to look at using different steel thickness.great to get different opinions. I know a ford falcon ute (aluminium) 8"x6" weighs about 100 kg without the sides and mountings.. Honestly I think an alloy one would be better, but if you have to use steel, try to use the smallest thickness possible without it being too thin.. What gauge steel are you currently working off? |

I believe my tray is around 100kg, not including the sides. |

In a LWB a little heavy is good, weight over the rear helps with traction |

Except that any weight you add with a tray you have to deduct from payload. If you are interested in payload and keeping the car under GVM you need the lightest possible tray. |

Gross vehicle mass. A Sierra has 400kg of payload. That includes all fluids, driver, passenger, and tray in the case of the ute. 120 of tray is 120kg less you can legally carry. |

Too much, but nowhere near 130kg. I'd make it much lighter next time. |

I think many make the claim that more weight over the back wheels helps or makes a car more capable offroad but in my experiances a lighter variant is better in every way. The weight transitions to the rear when climbing anyway. You have a chance to loose a few kgs i reckon make it as light as functionally possible |

Where are you Simroski? I have an aluminium tray of an LJ81 I'm willing to part with. And I'm sure it's under 100kg. |

Not sure how much my tray weighs but it takes 2 blokes struggling to lift it. It changed the abilities of the car, wouldn't say it made it better or worse... Absolutely needed heavy duty springs and it took a bit for them to soften up. If I was to do it again I would use much thinner steel, or just go for a lighter metal. It's a Suzuki, you won't be putting a ton in it....... |
