While searching for the source of an electrical short I removed my primary fuel tank to get at what turned out to be a crushed wiring harness between the sub tank and chassis, and after reinstalling a huge amount of contaminants filled and then bypassed what was a clean filter and clogged up the fuel injectors. It was within minutes of the next drive that the injectors began to clog up, at the time I assumed that there must have been an air lock or something in the primary line and switched to the sub tank which was providing clean fuel. After identifying the dirty filter and assuming it had allowed contaminant through, I removed the injectors to clean them, and then cycled the fuel pump a few times in an effort to try and flush out any remaining contaminant between the sub tank solenoid and the injectors. After reinstalling the injectors I found one was leaking from a worn o-ring and upon removing it found a small amount of new contaminant again... While I had the primary tank out I installed a new fuel gauge sender, and had shaken and swirled the tank while draining in to a receptacle with the intention of removing any build up, and the tank itself had been very clean. I did however have to bend one of the metal fuel rail pipes in order to remove and reinstall the tank, so I'm assuming I've broken up a build up of rust/grime from the inside of that pipe and that's what's come through the filter? It looked like very fine black and rusty coloured grains. The filter looked as though it was full of red/brown mud. Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions as to the best way to flush the lines, I would prefer not to have to remove the primary tank again if possible, in case I just add to the problem unnecessarily. If I was to simply allow the inline fuel pump to crank a few litres of fuel straight through to a bucket til it runs clean is there much risk to the pump itself or should it be fairly safe passing the contaminants through? Appreciate any suggestions! |
