Hi everyone,

I am very interested in getting a Jimny.

I took one for a test drive yesterday, it was a 2010 with 45000k on the clock. It has never been used offroad, in fact during the test drive I pulled over and put it into 4L and it took a long while before it engaged, I assume because its never actually been used on 4WD mode at all, maybe things underneath were gummed up a bit? Tried it a couple of times then it eventually engaged first press of the button every time.

One thing that really surprised me was the lack of power. I had my foot planted to the floor and it took what felt like ages to get up to speed in an 80km/h zone. Is this normal ? As this is the first Jimny I have ever driven I'm not sure if that is expected or not. I've seen videos on YouTube of Jimny's packed up to the roof with luggage and still able to navigate some really rough terrain with ease but I just couldn't see how that's possible with such a low powered motor.

While I'm at it, is there anything else to look out for on a secondhand Jimny?

They're not powerhouses, but you do need to rev them to get them to move. They don't have a lot of torque.

Offroad power has nothing to do with, well, anything really, it's all about gearing.

Yes Jimnys take a little longer to get up to speed, but if you're test driving, it should rev up quickly so you can skip though the gears.

The art is to stick in the power range of 3500 - 4200 as much as possible, don't be shy to wind them out every now and then.

Jimny engines don't make a lot of torque, but they're a free spinning, high revving engine that will happily sit on 4200+ rpm all day, not a problem.

And of course if you do decide to buy it you could always opt for a bigger engine as some people have done,that will make a difference.
