Led to believe that all nt sierra's came out with the lower 0.795 5th gear ratio as opposed to the wt 0.864 ratio. Can anyone confirm these suspicions?

I'm also interested. I did some calcs, and my WT SJ50 has the taller (.795).

I'm also trying to sus if that is related to 18/20 tooth input splines.

Will have a look at my NT gearbox tomorrow. I do recall LROR asking which gearbox it was when supplying rebuild parts so there is a difference at least in some regard.

Sideways is the go to guy for this sort of info too, he’ll undoubtedly be able to tell you for sure. Otherwise I’ll see what I can do to confirm tomorrow

I'd also like to know, it makes sense.

Also props for calcing out your 5th in the SJ50wt. :)

Nah I dunno.

NT 1.3 is 0.795 and SJ70 is 0.864. The question is, what are SJ50 WTs? I looked up the part numbers a while back, megazip has a page for MY88.5-89 SJ413s. The part number for the 5th gears in those is the same as SJ70 but I reckon that's incorrect and GZ89 is on the money. A number of people have said they have 3.9 diff gears in their SJ50wts which naturally implies the taller 5th.

In case any one cares... The tooth counts are 23/44 for the 0.795 5th. I believe they're 25/44 for the 0.864 but that needs confirming.

There's a few other differences in the gearboxes. Early has a smaller bolt that locates the shifter)M6 vs M8 ), different switches/plugs on the top and IIRC has some smaller detent balls? Bearing/seals are the same.

Just out of interest the taller 5th gears were around US$200 a set. I was looking as I have a set with a tooth missing. It would be interesting to see if these could go into a Jimny gearbox for those running sierra transfers. They are the same family of gearbox but who knows what Suzuki have changed over the years.

Easy way to figure what one you have with the box in the car, at 4000rpm in 4th shift to 5th without losing speed or do the same speed (gps it). 3180rpm = 0.795. 3450=0.864. Would be easier to tell with more revs but you'd probably have to be in low range unless you've got a G16b.

If the box is out i guess the simplest method would be mark the input and output shafts, put it in 5th, then spin the output 10 times and see if you either get ~8turns (1:0.795) or ~8.5turns (1:0.864) on the input.

This is the actual question as I have the bitsa model SJ50WT Armsup . To add to the confusion the stock centers in this one are 3.7 (with nt flanges) as opposed to 3.9s and it seems like mine came with the higher 0.864:1 5th (I sit on a true 100kph @ 3600rpm with 31's and 4.9 tcase gears).

Are the 5th gear sets interchangeable?

Mate im also curious, as I recently aquired an sj70 which has either a chain driven transfer swap (from a coily) or a sj50 box swap. In 4th it does 4000rpm and then shift to 5th revs drop back around 3350 at 100, about 2900-3000 at 90 dont quote me on the exact figures.

I have a SJ51 LWB WT 1.3 Jap Built, and I think I have the low geared one, because my revs drop from 4000 in fourth to 3450ish in fifth. If that sheds any more light on the mystery

Wow those sj51 wt's are rare nice pick! Im not sure of the ratios of the lwbs I would be under the impression that it would have sj50 gearing as they came out at around the same time. But as far as im aware an sj70 with standard gearing should be doing 3600 revs in 5th gear doing 100kph.

If it has the big block G13a then it has the taller 5th gear

Yep. All sj50 both narrow and wide track have a 1324cc motor while later cars have a 1296cc motor

G13A - 1324cc / G13BA - 1298cc / G13BA came out in the sj70 and continued into the sj80

Aha. But, I have the 1324, but it appears I have the shorter fifth, with my revs only dropping from 4000 to 3450... Nothing matches in my car I swear haha

I am also convinced I have reduction gears in my transfer. This is my second transfer haha after changing out the coily transfer that was in it.

I have 225/70 tyres, so larger than standard, and I'm doing 3750 at 90... It's quite loud at 110 let me tell you.

Before I go and count turns under the car, does this sound like a reduction transfer? I'm in love with the low range gearing, I can idle up the driveway (steep) when cold, and it's a nice speed for 4wd work, but highway use is just painful.

I suspect that if I were to change to the taller fifth, I'd have a better overdrive for highway speeds, without sacrificing low range gearing, or normal around town performance (hill starts etc). Does anyone know if the fifth gearsets are interchangeable?

Its hard to work out tramsfer reduction in high, there are too many variables you need to know. Actual tyre size, gearbox ratios, diff ratios. Dropping the shafts and counting the turns of the input V output in low will tell you what low range you have. Then use the gearing chart to cross reference back to high range.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. What's this gearing chart? I think I've heard it referenced before but haven't seen it. Is it like an excel spreadsheet that someone's made up?

It's better, like pictures with teeth counts!
