With the now unified ADR of +50mm (2") wheel dia, and +50mm suspension lift, I thought it'd be nice if we could gather our references to figure out what exactly our limits are.

So for a Coily (Info from tyre placard):
Stock: 205/70R15 - 669 mm (26.3")
Largest: 225/75R15 - 719 mm (28.3")

As you can see, it's bugger all. Apparently the LWB all had 16", are they close enough to the SWB that we can count as as same model?
JDM stock is 16", and we can prove it's 100% same vehicle as our local coily, but my current information says that anything outside of australia doesn't count. Anyone heard otherwise?

Please add your first-hand tyre placard / government info so we can keep this up to date and maybe get us an extra 1"!

This has been tried lots of times. There was (at least one?) engineer in Victoria, where we have worked with the NCOP for a long time, who would accept the "commercial" Sierra tyre size of 6.00X16 as a basis for engineering any Sierra. This would allow a 31" tyre.

However, not every engineer would. Commercial sierras didn't meet the same ADR's as passenger Sierras when new and that can be used as a basis for not permitting a swap of placarded sizes between the cars.

However, you certainly wouldn't get away with it on a coily. Not only is the whole suspension setup different but the wheel bearings and so on are too. 660s do run 16s but it's a very small tyre size, something like 165/80. That's not what what was sold here anyway.

With early 1ls it's as simple as the lower model (what would become the JA) had 16x600s and the "luxury" models had FR78-15s (obsolete American tyre size, approx 27.5x8"). SJ50s were also available with 16x600s. This can be proved by the NSW Vehicle Standards Information sheets (available online) and magazine articles of the time.

I think it's very reasonable to justify using that tyre size as a base for engineering on a SJ70 even though they only had 205/70r15s. It's the same hubs, wheelbearings, kingpins, brakes, cvs, tie rods ect as what was on an SJ50.

There's also the optional sand tyre, 16x650 but that wasn't offered here. You can also argue if the 16x600s were 105% aspect ratio or 100%. They measure like 105% and some people say they're 105% but I've never seen anything to prove that they were.

I think trying to eek out the maximum possible legit tyre size (without engieering) out of a car is pretty pointless, the 30x9.5s on my sierra (1l) are legal but they don't look it to the average person who's only seen 205/70r15s on "stock" sierras for the last 25 years. A policeman is probably going to go fuck you, I'm giving you a sticker anyway or just find something else to sticker me for. Same sort of deal with aliens car, it's 100% legit and engineered but he still got a sticker. On the flip side, most people wouldn't bat an eye at 33s on a solid axle Hilux even though most of them only have a 205r16 (29") as standard because just about every "stock" Hilux has been running 31s since forever.

It's all in the perception really, cover the tyres (flares), don't go stupid on wheel offset, make sure your mud flaps are legal, keep the car neat, clean and somewhat legal looking and you're unlikely to have an issue.

Ive run 32"s and commute daily to the city for over 8 years without any issues. If it looks illegal then you will get unwanted attention regardless. Fact is theres more modded zooks on oversized tyres than stockers now days, most cops wouldnt know what a stock zook looked like.
Aliens car is legal but with 31x10.5 tyres looks bigger/more illegal than mine on 32"s

I was just unlucky - the cop only ever saw mine side on, that it was tall and big-tyred, and he was an utter bigot. His partner was no better. The thing with my sierra, is that i can't easily just go back to stock. Nothing's bolt-on. So engineering meant i got to keep it on the road after that run-in.

Fact is, police can yellow sticker your sierra 'on suspicion' alone, regardless of what paperwork etc you have.

That whole ordeal cost me around $800 by the time i was done with inspection fees and fixing the few niggly issues found at the pits (lightly perished fuel lines, sloppy steering, seatbelt missing the stopper plastic thing etc).

I did however cause that knobjockey midland motorcycle cop about 6 months of pain by chasing up every possible avenue of complaint against him, relentlessly. It probably cost me more in time than it did actual money, but i figured if he could flaunt his "rights" then so could i.

Basically, arguing with a cop about tyre size is like arguing on the internet. If you really want to run a bigger tyre, engineer it. Then when/if the time comes it's the least of your concerns going over the pits, and you just have to worry about the day to day stuff like no play in wheel bearings blah blah...
