Hi all, So I'm about to get my hands on this little black sierra cheap, and as far as I'm aware the engine in it is shot. So I'm not going go muddle around like I did with the old sierra I had, I want to swap it out and make it a bit more drivable. So what's better? A G16B 8v efi engine from a vitara or a G13BB efi engine from a Swift GTI? to my knowledge the G13BB is a twin can where as the G16B is a single cam engine. I have heard people talk about the twin can engines having more grunt and so forth but I think old school in that there is no replacement for displacement. The other thing I considered is the G16B is out of a Vitara which is also a 4WD which should mean it has a much better torque curve focused in the lower revs as opposed to the GTI engine having its power up top being a 2WD. What's everyone's opinion? What's better? And is there any requirements for year matching on the engines to match emissions laws or any knicky stuff like that? Cheers 8-)

Everything being equal between the engines (price, condition, KMS) I'd take the G16B over the GTi G13BB every time. It has more power everywhere, and a much nicer torque and power curve down lower in the rev range.

Just to be clear, the GTi motor is a G13B. The G13BB is the SOHC 16V jimny motor.
I too would choose the G16B over the G13B.

Okay thanks guys the G16B it is then. My next question, is does it matter if its the 8v or 16v engine? I know the 16v G16B's are raved about among vitara owners in the LWB vitaras as having a bit more grunt.
I'm pretty sure if I remember right the 8v was only in the SWB and the 16v was only in the LWB.
Will either engine fit?

8v EFI engines exist, but aren't exactly common. I think you might be thinking about the carby 8v G16A in the SWB vits.

All G16b's are SOHC 16v EFI. All LWB 1.6 Vitaras are g16B
G16A's are almost all carb and 8v*
Swb Vitara went to G16B around 1994/1995.
*there are some Japanese import G16A's which are 16V.

Ah okay so most efi G16B's are 16v no matter if they are fromma SWB or LWB. Alright that makes it easy. So if I can't find a low km G16B and I want to rebuild it, what's the best place to get a rebuild kit for one? ACL would be my first thought but their website doesn't list a G16B only the swift M16A engine.
Is the low range kit any good?

I don't believe there is any point rebuilding a G motor. The cost of the machining is prohibitive. Just buy a low KM baleno if you need a new long motor.

The baleno is the same 16v G16B engine?
And seeing I will need to pull the loom ecu injectors etc etc out of the donor car, it will also need to be a manual? Or can I use an auto engine?

Long block is the same. Baleno has different manifolds, loom and some sensors, and you'll need to swap to a Vitara cam to retain the Vitara distributor.
Vitara manual and auto ecu's are the same, Vitara uses a separate transmission control computer. Baleno has a different computer for manual and auto.

So it would be easier to find a vitara engine? But if I can't find one there is a way to put a baleno engine into the sierra.

Yes Vitara is the easiest swap, Baleno distributor g16B is the hardest/messiest. Coil pack Baleno with a Jimny inlet manifold is the neatest/newest

Ah okay the baleno engine jimmy manifold sounds the best option. How hard are the coil pack baleno engines to get a hold of? I'm assuming they are in the later model balenos?

Just had a closer look, its a 1985 SJ50 G13A .. This won't make any difference to the conversion? Its still a 5 speed box

Is there a decent write up to be found anywhere about this coil pack G16B conversion? Want to know the finer details.. Like what throttle body to use? What AFM sensor to use etc etc.. I've heard little things like this make big differences in Suzuki engine conversions, for example the jimmy M18A conversion

That's the 1st year for 1.3litre / 5 speed - a better start point than a 1.0litre / 4 speed!. The G16B won't bolt directly to the 5speed - adapter plate or jiggery pokery required (hole drilling, grinding). Rgs, Michael

Haha yeah I did notice that! Its a lucky starting point yeah I'm aware of all the mounting kits inlcuding BenT's kit which is apparently the best. However I'm now trying to lay it out as this is the first thing I want to do to it once it is rego'd. I'll just have it sit for a while and I'll convert it it might take me a while to get it all the parts I need together but eventually I'll have everything I need

V just denotes van- hardtop.
You'd want to use the whole setup from the Baleno, injection wise. Only difference will be if you can find a jimny intake manifold, this will eliminate the need to run coolant piping from the back of the head as per the fwd fitment.
All sensors throttle body etc will stay Baleno.

Not a massive difference powerwise between jimny g13bb and baleno g16b Both are good upgrade, g13bb is much easier for the novice

Thanks

Yes I know there a tiny number of g16A 16v LWB vitaras. (They're a pain) Considering the confusion the engine numbering conventions were causing the OP I didn't want to muddy the water any more.
Yes the g engine jimny conversion plate should be the same as a sierra one.

The jimny conversion kit will come with a different engine mount adapter for the driver side.
Besides that, its the same I believe.
