Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

he wont know what's broke until he pulls it out.

the crown wheel might be ok. the axle could be broken?

new muffler perhaps?

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

haha, that too. diff noise

Author:  royce [ Fri Dec 08, 2006 12:56 am ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

if its noisy when you accelerate and quiet when you back off you can pretty well bet the pinion bearings are shot

Author:  oscar [ Fri Dec 08, 2006 12:59 am ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

really, he recons it sounds like metal on metal. he beter put it apart in case it is just the bearings so he doesnt trash the rest

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

Will u need a wt crown and p0inion for a 5:12 center

Author:  royce [ Sat Dec 09, 2006 12:37 am ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

5.12 is the gear ratio
crown and pinion and the gears
WT gears are 3.7 ration

so no you wont, gears will be useless

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

haha hmmm u may be right.

me bro recons he may need a new vit diff which is 5:12. is there any gear swaping or anything else need to be done before the 5:12 can be bolted to a wt diff

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

go slap your brother round the head a bit

his diff is made of these parts

Sierra carrier (the big steel bit everything bolts to)
Vitara 5.12 front gears (crownwheel and pinion)
Sierra hemisphere (the bits where the axles slide into)
various bearings (same for both diffs)

the bit that is stuffed on his will be the bearings (you can be 99% sure fo that)

the only way buying any WT diffs will help him is if he goes and buys a front and rear sierra diffs and puts them in with the resulting difference in acceleration and low range gearing

swapping gears is hard work and a job for somebody with the tools and knowhow (and by tools I mean dial gauges, presses and preload meters)

pull the tail shaft off, jack the wheels up and give the pinion a shake to check for any free play / dodgy sounds

then pull it out, take to diff shop and get bearing replaced, only be a few hundred

Author:  royce [ Sat Dec 09, 2006 2:23 am ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

I will fix it for free

if you buy all the tools needed to do it and donate them to me

I can do you a deal on the dial guage and stand, but buggered if I know where to get the prelod checker from bar suzuki

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

ok steve i'll drop in in

in 2010

Hmm. so if its just the bearings u would recomend just getting them replaces. why would it be 300 or so.Labour intensive ah i just got a complete kit for me case for 115

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

bearings arent dear but yeah setting the pinion is a bit time consuming cause you have to put it together, check it and pull it apart and re shim if its no good

though as it has been running it might be quicker to fix up

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

cool, hopfully the gears are ok

Author:  oscar [ Sat Dec 09, 2006 9:08 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

ok bad news, gears are stuffed aparently, so if he gets a wt front he will have two wt diffs to use BUT he has a lockright in the front.Iam guessing that it wont go in a wt diff or ami wrong

Author:  royce [ Sat Dec 09, 2006 9:49 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

who said and how do they know?

did they set em up and lap em or is it missing teeth?

if he only needs some gears, just go buy a 5.12 vitara front diff and pinch the gears and chuck the rest

if he has a lockrite in the front he will need a WT rear diff to swap it over, cant fit a locrite to a WT front

confused yet

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

nope understand.

he said it was major slopy after taking tail shaft off. then when he pulled the diff centre out it was missing teeth etc.

so ants rear still wont fit if u just use the gears

Post subject:  Re: vitara 5:12 diff

nope vit front and rear are different size
