Planning on doing a couple thousand kilometers over the Christmas break, heading down to Esperance and generally the WA Great Southern region. I know that doing this in a Sierra will be troublesome and require a bit of pre-planning in regards to setup and packing, but I'm still interested and having done a 4000km trip in an 80 series earlier this year the thought of having less room to pack junk that never gets used anyway has me a bit excited. I will mainly be going into a town every couple of days so it won't be remote as such but I'd like to know how people have done "big" trips in their smaller 4x4s. Having been in a large vehicle on my past long trips I've had the added benefit of space, power, aircon, plenty of fuel and water tanks and a rooftop tent. Now downsizing I will have to completely restructure. So for this I have a few ideas: I'll be taking out the passenger seat in the Sierra to lay my swag there I've got a dual battery (sorry steve), which will run my fridge A 20L water tub should fit behind the drivers seat Weber will fit in the passenger footwell, hopefully with the gas bottle. I know if I really wanted to save space I'd go butane but it shits me to tears. A chair should fit somewhere easy enough Then I have a box of the usual recovery shite and spare bits. 20L jerry will be my sub tank, in the event my Sierra does over 10L/100km Let me know what you think. This weekend will be a test run with this setup. Cheers

^ this was my SWB from Adelaide to Perth. Double swag, small esky (although a good 50ltr esky on my next trip was better. You’ve got a fridge though so all catered for) Basic tools and a bit of gear. It’s always a treat not having too much gear on trips I reckon Enjoy the trip! Will be great

I respect the endeavor. Somehow last year I went camping with 4 in the Jimny, tents and blankets for all, small coal fake Webber, esky with food and beers for 4, 4 deck chairs, table to prepare food and citronella candles. Trip was around 1000 kms round with 400 off-road. Still not sure how we managed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The plan is going to be delayed, I'm moving house right in the middle of when I want to go. Current rent is up so its all systems go to get into the new place. However, bit of an update on the setup. I used it to go to Sandy Cape for two nights and it worked reasonably well, I have an ARB double swag but I think next time I'll be opting to use my dome tent to save on space. I'll also be going for some form of drawer system. I'll have to measure and do up a few sketches to see what will best work because everything flying around in tubs isn't great.

Haha... ARB double swag = patrol touring. Hiking tent and self inflating mattress = Zook touring. When you do your drawers make sure you put good sturdy tie down points in the corners to strap down all the extra junk that doesn’t fit in the drawers.

We went to Esperance in January in my SWB 'Cruiser. Dunno if you've been there before but you'l be fine for fuel range if you're doing cape le grand and wharton bay, beyond that you'l want the Jerry. The roads in/near cape arid NP were in appalling condition and you'd be well looking forward to a rest after a day of driving around in a Sierra there. There's a short cut through the scrub there, I'd take the long way round in a Sierra, it's pretty punishing and it's probably quicker to go the long way too. Honestly after the other stuff cape arid NP just wasn't that impressive and whilst I'm pleased to tick that one off the list, I don't feel a need to go back. I haven't done any big touring style trips in my Sierra but I intend to. Everything we take in the 'Cruiser would fit pretty happily and I'm confident we could do it under payload too. We use a tent instead of a swag mostly because it packs up a lot smaller (you couldn't physically fit a double swag in any of my cars). We roll it up like you would a swag and there's an air matress in it, it rolls up to about the same diameter but 1/3 the length of my single swag. Also this will keep the dust out of your bedding which will be important if your flexiglass roof is anything like mine. We use one of these, it takes under 4 minutes to set up (including pumping up the matress), is cheap as, has full air flow and packs up small. http://www.oztrail.com.au/products/product/skygazer-3 You'l go through legrand NP but you really must see Wharton bay. Dunn Rock dunes is a great free camping and worth a look. There's a small town (Condingup) about 70kms east of Esperance which has fuel and supplies. Every beach is like this.

Damn that looks nice, I'm envious. I like the idea of rolling the tent up with the mattress inside it, might make the pack up routine a bit nicer. Although it does have a nice little bag that it's meant to go in when it'a folded.

I was skeptical at first but with a 1.6 i wouldnt hesitate to tow a light trailer with a roof top or the like. Mine had no probs towing offroad and didnt have to overload the car

Yeah the bloke that brought it off me in albany is selling it after a year and a half. Typically most sierra drivers own there car for less than 12 months especially those with new familys. 6.5's, twin locked, 32's with a 1.6 is pretty fun even with a trailer on, outdriving bigger rigs running 35's whilst towing a trailer is pretty satisfying especially on the beach

Yeah the lwb sierras and traybacks were pushed pretty hard down south. Ive had a couple of trayback maruti's that were originally sold from a waroona car yard new

TBH unless you're going way east you really have to go out of your way to find tight tracks. My aim was Isrealite bay but 3 of the 4 mounts broke off the radiator (ebay alloy...) so that put an end to it. I tied it up with some wire and we drove 500kms like that haha. For pack up we pull the pillows out, fold it into 1/4s, roll it up and put an occy strap around it. It's probably quicker than a lot of swags. Things rust to bad down here and the farmers have killed them all and moved on to side by sides. I reckon up north is the place to go for LWBs now, Geraldton and above. Always see more LWBs than I've ever seen down here. We saw 5 1.3l longbodies in exmouth last year!
